On the Álava Alternative of the Camino de Santiago, Elburgo/Burgelu is a stop along the way: pilgrims arrive from Gipuzkoa through the San Adrian Tunnel. There are also older connections to routes and buildings from different periods. Keeping these themes distinct helps reveal the difference between a present-day pilgrim route, the history of medieval roads, and the Romanesque churches that shape the area’s cultural character.

Pilgrim Routes and Historical Connections

The Álava Alternative of the Way of St. James passes through Elburgo/Burgelu. Another, older connection is the ancient Roman road Ab Asturica Burdigalam, which linked Bordeaux with Astorga. In the Middle Ages, pilgrims travelling to Compostela used part of its route through Álava, known as the Calzada de los romanos. Thus, two periods stand side by side: today’s stop on a Camino alternative and the medieval use of a section of the ancient road.

Other routes are also useful for orientation, though they should not be equated with the Way of St. James. The GR-10 is one of the routes in the municipality. The GR-25 runs through the southern part of Elburgo/Burgelu and connects the Llanada Alavesa. Rural paths link the various villages; some sections pass through areas of natural and cultural interest.

Romanesque Churches and Historic Architecture

The Ermita de San Juan de Arrarain dates from the 12th century. Its semicircular Romanesque ashlar apse is the last surviving remnant of the former early medieval village of Arrarain. Elburgo is also home to the Iglesia de San Pedro, at the highest point of the hill. It replaced an earlier Romanesque church and has an elongated hall plan with tercelet vaults.

The Iglesia de San Martín de Tours, dating from the 13th century, stands in Gazeta. Its design combines Romanesque elements with features that herald the Gothic style. This is particularly evident in the late Romanesque portal: it has a pointed arch and five archivolts decorated with plant, geometric, and anthropomorphic motifs. The Iglesia de la Natividad de Nuestra Señora in Añua is also a 13th-century church; it has medieval features and is Romanesque. Its apse is considered one of the richest examples of medieval art in the Llanada Alavesa.

One route combines walking and cultural heritage. It differs from the GR-10 and GR-25, which are simply route connections: here, walking and culture are both part of the concept described.

The Village and Its Earlier History

The historic centre of Elburgo/Burgelu sits on a small rise above a plain. The Iglesia de San Pedro marks its highest point. Outside the fortified area stands the 16th-century Picota. It was used to carry out sentences and recalls a time when Elburgo exercised civil and criminal jurisdiction in the surrounding area. This historical function should be distinguished from the building’s significance today.

The name, too, has a long history: the first documentary reference to Elburgo dates from the 11th century, when the place appears as Burgello. Together with the history of the Roman road and medieval pilgrim connections, this creates a timeline that extends far beyond the construction dates of individual churches.

More Routes and Activities

There are also several activities to suit different interests. The former route of the Ferrocarril Vasco-Navarro, which linked Estella/Lizarra with Vitoria-Gasteiz, has been restored as a cycle path. Geocaching is available in the municipality, with numerous caches at various locations. There are also 25 crosses scattered across the municipality. Their distribution is a cultural feature in its own right, not a designated route.

For trip planning, the themes can therefore be clearly distinguished: pilgrim history and churches lead to the historical connections; GR routes, rural paths, and the cycle path offer other ways to explore, while geocaching provides another activity. This makes it possible to see which of these aspects is of most interest by considering the routes and buildings described, without combining them into a single circular route.
