Gopegi reveals several distinct aspects of its local history: a church of medieval origin, a neighbouring tower and traditional communal spaces. Annual events and attractions in Gorbeia Natural Park add to the picture. When planning your trip, you can weigh up whether architectural history, regional festival traditions or outdoor activities should shape your stay.

The Church of the Assumption and its Building History

The Church of the Assumption in Gopegi is a single-nave building of medieval origin. In the 16th century, it was extended with a transept. This makes it possible to trace both the building’s medieval origins and a later expansion. The Romanesque round-arched portal, flanked by plain columns, adds a distinctive architectural feature.

The church also preserves a striking detail on its south façade: 21 corbels from its medieval construction phase, decorated with human and animal heads. These figurative motifs differ from the clearly defined form of the round-arched portal. A 17th-century altarpiece adds another, later element. Visitors interested in church architecture will therefore find not just one feature, but several aspects to consider separately: the ground plan, the extension, the portal, the façade decoration and the altarpiece.

Tower, Fountain and Bengolarra

Directly beside the church stands the Goikoetxea or Goikolea Tower. It is almost square in shape and stands twelve metres high. Its name, shape and dimensions give the tower a distinctive place in Gopegi’s architectural history. Together with the church, it offers an opportunity to compare two neighbouring buildings without conflating their different features.

Another point of historical interest is a complex built in 1883, comprising a fountain, a livestock trough and a washhouse. These three elements are part of traditional infrastructure and illustrate different communal functions within a single architectural ensemble. The Bengolarra recreation area offers a different perspective: it is surrounded by oak trees and landscaped grounds. While the church, tower and fountain complex focus on architectural history, Bengolarra is a landscaped setting.

Pilgrimage and Horse Fair in the Surrounding Area

A pilgrimage to San Roque takes place every year in the area around Gopegi. It ends with a communal lunch, dancing and rural sports demonstrations. The Ermita de San Roque is also located in the area, on a historic pilgrimage route at the entrance to Gopegi’s Dehesa. The local points of interest therefore include both a recurring tradition and a specific link to a historic route; this does not imply a particular connection between the course of the pilgrimage and the route itself.

Another annual event is the Sarragoa Horse Fair. It takes place in the meadows of Sarragoa between Ondategi and Gopegi. The programme includes sporting demonstrations and the sale of regional products. Unlike the pilgrimage, which ends with a communal lunch and dancing, the fair is characterised by its demonstrations and regional produce. If you plan your trip around one of these events, check the date in advance.

Activities and Practical Planning

Hípica Gopegi offers guided horse rides in Gorbeia Natural Park. Advance reservations are required for Hípica Gopegi’s offerings, and they must be confirmed. This is an important planning point if you want to include a horse ride in your trip: making a reservation alone does not replace the required confirmation.

Anyone, as well as clubs and other organisations, may apply to use the municipal Bolera de Bengolarra in Gopegi. If you plan to make use of this facility, check the terms of use before your visit. Together, horse rides and the bolera offer different activity options, while the church, tower and traditional structures provide the cultural focus. Gopegi thus offers several specific points of interest to help you decide which topics matter most for your trip.
