Dark sand and shallow water define Cala Tirant beach. The surrounding area also includes a dune system that extends far inland and geological outcrops. This gives you several points of interest for planning your trip: the bathing area, the coastal landscape and Menorca’s geological history.

Cove, Beach and Landscape

Cala Tirant opens up between the headlands of Punta Llarga and Punta Negra at the entrance to Tirant Bay. The beach lies within this bay and is characterised by dark sand and shallow water. It comprises two bathing areas separated by a small rise. A staircase crosses this rise, making it a useful landmark if you plan to visit both areas.

The Cala Tirant–Binidonairet area also includes a wetland and a dune system. The latter extends about 2 km inland. This approximate extent gives the coastal landscape a broader spatial scope than the beach cove alone. The area is also part of the Reserva Marina del Nord de Menorca. The dunes, wetland and protected-area status thus add further landscape features to Cala Tirant’s description as a beach destination.

Geological Traces on the West Side

Geological outcrops on the west side of Cala Tirant contain rocks considered the oldest in the Balearic Islands. Graptolite fossils in these rocks date their deposition to about 400 million years ago, from the Late Silurian to the Early Devonian. The approximate age and geological period together provide a timeframe for these rocks.

The geological site can be reached by walking about 900 m from the junction to the CamĂ de Cavalls in the direction of Cavalleria. This also makes it possible to combine a visit to the site with specific route guidance: the starting point is the junction, and the stated direction is Cavalleria.

Route Section and Surfing Lessons

The Camí de Cavalls includes a route section called “Cala Tirant–Binimel·là”. This name places Cala Tirant within the trail network. The geological site, meanwhile, has its own directions via the junction and footpath towards Cavalleria. When planning, you can therefore distinguish between the named route section and the described access to the site.

Surfing lessons are also among the activities available at the beach: they usually take place at Cala Tirant beach in Platges de Fornells. If a surfing lesson is important to your travel plans, check the provider’s current schedule in advance. This lets you consider it as a possible activity without assuming a particular date.

Bus Connections

The regular IB-08 passenger service connects Fornells with MaĂł and Fornells with Es Mercadal, stopping at Cala Tirant (Platges de Fornells), among other places. This provides a specific reference point for planning your journey. Services and timetables may change, so check the latest information before travelling.
