Sant Jordi offers a range of reasons to plan a trip: the Fira de la Sal in October, the fortified church of Iglesia Sant Jordi de Ses Salines and a small Saturday market near the village. There is also the Ses Salines Nature Park and routes to Ses Salines and Es Cavallet beaches. When choosing your dates, it makes a difference whether you are travelling for the annual Fira or want to visit the weekly market; the beach destinations also have different directions for getting there.
Salt traditions and market days
The Fira de la Sal takes place every year in October in Ses Salines Nature Park and the village of Sant Jordi. It celebrates the age-old traditions of salt production. Visitors can watch culinary demonstrations and take part in workshops about using salt in Ibizan cuisine. The activities may vary from one edition to another, and the exact event dates change from year to year. If you are travelling specifically for the Fira, check the dates for the relevant edition in advance. This way, you can plan your stay around the specific festival dates within the recurring October period.
A small market is also held near Sant Jordi every Saturday. It sells second-hand goods, handicrafts and clothing. Its weekly schedule sets it apart from the Fira, which takes place once a year in October: the market offers a reason to visit on a Saturday, while the Fira is tied to its particular edition. Check the market day before your trip; what is on offer may change over time.
A church with defensive architecture
Iglesia Sant Jordi de Ses Salines is one of Ibiza’s four earliest fortified churches and the best preserved of them. Its first documented mention dates back to 1469; it was probably still under construction at the time. Sloping outer walls and battlements around the upper roof give it a distinctly defensive character. For those interested in culture, it brings together historical context and striking features of defensive architecture.
Nature park, beaches and getting there
Ses Salines Nature Park is in the vicinity of Sant Jordi. To reach Ses Salines beach, take the paved road towards the airport as far as the edge of Sant Jordi de ses Salines; there, turn left towards sa Canal. The beach is accessible by car, by bicycle using a bike lane, or on a regular public bus route that stops a few metres from the beach.
To reach Es Cavallet beach, follow the route from the edge of Sant Jordi towards sa Canal. Continue along the road for 4 km, then take the turn-off to the beach. Es Cavallet is also accessible by car, by bicycle using a bike lane, or on the regular bus route towards Ses Salines beach. The routes therefore differ in specific ways: at Ses Salines, a stop is located a few metres from the beach; for Es Cavallet, the 4 km road section from the edge of the village and the turn-off that follows are useful landmarks. Road access may change seasonally or temporarily, and transport services and routes can also change. So check the current route and connection before setting off.
Location as a factor in choosing where to stay
Sant Jordi is the village closest to the airport and is very close to the tourist area of Platja d’en Bossa. Ses Salines Nature Park is also nearby. If you are looking for a holiday rental, you can take these location points into account alongside your interest in the Fira, the fortified church or the market when choosing where to stay.
