Mieres del Camín has Roman origins hidden beneath the present-day city. La Villa is a prominent reference point in the history of the town: the neighborhood is the original center of Mieres and lies on the pilgrimage route to Santiago. La Villa has a traditional urban character; its irregular network of streets and squares is characteristic of early agricultural settlements. The neighborhood’s outer areas can be visited.

Historic Townscapes and Architecture

Casa Duró is the oldest secular building in the city of Mieres. In La Villa stands the Palacio del Marqués de Camposagrado, a significant architectural monument protected as an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC). Its features include a central colonnaded courtyard, surrounding gardens, and an art collection. The parish church of San Juan Bautista adds a different era to the architectural picture: it was built in 1926 and is distinctly neo-Baroque in style.

Casa de Cultura Teodoro Cuesta is the hub of a network of cultural facilities. These include an auditorium, an exhibition space, a library, and a reading room. If you are planning to attend a specific program or visit, check the latest information about the program and access arrangements.

Routes Between the Pilgrim Route and Mining History

The CamĂn del Salvador is a cultural route that, in Mieres, explores part of the official Camino del Salvador, or Way of St. James, as well as the history and industrial heritage of the area. The Ruta del Ferrocarril de Baltasara offers a different focus: it starts and ends at Plaza de Requexu, is 10.4 kilometers long, and is easy and suitable for families. As a VĂa Verde, it can be walked all year round. It combines nature and mining history, passing industrial remnants in a landscape shaped by mining. Temporary maintenance work may affect route conditions; check before setting out. The routes therefore offer different points of reference to help you choose: the pilgrimage route and industrial heritage on the CamĂn, and the specified distance and difficulty on the Baltasara.

The traffic-free Plaza de Requexu, also known as Plaza San Juan, is the starting and ending point of the Ruta del Ferrocarril de Baltasara. Cider is also served there, and traditional establishments are located on the square. Individual businesses may change; if you have a particular place in mind, check current offerings.

Mining History in the Municipality

Bustiello is another aspect of the municipality’s mining history. The settlement was established between 1890 and 1917 as a mining community. Its workers’ houses are arranged along three streets and have small gardens. This layout makes the structure of the settlement easy to understand. Unlike individual architectural monuments, the focus here is on the layout of an entire workers’ settlement.
