The palaces, the PR AS-39 hiking trail and the Mercau Astur offer different reasons to stay in Cenera. When looking for accommodation, you can first decide whether to focus on architecture, the green valley landscape or a local event. For your journey, both a driving route and a public transport connection between Mieres and Cenera are relevant.

The palaces: two periods of construction

The Palacio de Arriba is a baroque palace complex in Cenera dating from the late 16th century. Its estate includes a chapel, stables, a bridge and a dovecote. In the official cultural heritage register as of August 2026, the Palacio de Arriba de Cenera is protected as an asset of special cultural interest. The entry gives 20 April 1995 as its publication date; this is the publication date, not the construction period of the palace.

The Palacio de Abajo is a vernacular baroque palace in Cenera dating from 1736. The comparison moves from the late 16th century to the specific year 1736; at the same time, the description shifts from a baroque palace complex to a vernacular baroque style classification. The two palaces therefore offer different points of interest for exploring architectural history.

Green valley, views and hiking trail

Cenera is characterized by green landscapes in a valley that escaped much of the industrial transformation of the surrounding area. From the El Cantu recreation area, you can enjoy views of Monte Llosorio, Peñarreigá and Cenera. The PR AS-39 hiking trail starts and ends in Cenera and passes through sections of oak woodland. These two landscape features also offer different options for planning: El Cantu is known for the views mentioned; the PR AS-39 for a trail with oak sections that begins and ends in the village. Cenera itself plays a dual role: it is one of the places visible from El Cantu and is also the starting and finishing point of the PR AS-39.

Getting there by car and public transport

By car, you can reach Cenera via the MI-3 and then the MI-4 from El Pedroso. EMUTSA provides a public transport connection between Mieres and Cenera. If you plan to use this connection, check the operator’s current timetable before travelling. This gives you both a specific driving route and a public transport connection to consider for your journey.

Mercau Astur and rock engraving

The “Mercau Astur” is held in Cenera alongside the “Menú Mercau Astur” food festival. At the market, local residents wear traditional Asturian clothing. If you want to plan your trip around this event, check the dates in advance.

Another cultural point of interest is the “Petroglifo de Cenera” rock engraving. It is considered, with almost complete certainty, to be the first artistic expression in the Caudal Basin. Unlike the palaces, it points to an archaeological interpretation of early art, while the palaces are classified chiefly by their architectural style and period.
