Ovio offers panoramic views of the Cantabrian Sea. The coastal path, shorter routes and individual beach access points provide different starting points for planning your trip: you can plan your stay around a walking route, a bike ride or a specific visit to the coast.

Coastal Paths and Planning

The San Antolín–Guadamía section of the Senda Costera passes around Ovio and Picones. Between Ovio and Picones, the Capilla de San Antonio can be seen on a hill overlooking the Cantabrian Sea. The nearby chapel stands above a bay with fine, white sand. This part of the path thus links the route with a specific coastal viewpoint.

Another section of the Senda Costera runs between Hontoria and Oviu. This section was included in a municipal repair programme for the coastal path in 2024. The place names make it easy to distinguish between the two sections.

There are shorter routes around Ovio that you can explore on foot or by bicycle. Paths there run along cliffs, hidden beaches and forests. Details of the shorter routes may vary depending on the season, so plan your specific route around the time of your trip. A seasonal route suggestion that returns each year, Bicycle Route 1 of the Ruta de los Belenes de Nueva y Valle de San Jorge, passes through Oviu.

You can combine a train journey with the outward or return leg of the Senda Costera. If you choose this option, check the timetable for your travel day and plan your train journey around the path section. The coastal path infrastructure is subject to routine maintenance, so it is worth checking the current condition of the path when planning your trip.

Coast and History

The nearby Ermita de San Antonio was built by the Marquises de la Vega del Sella as a burial place for themselves and several generations of their family. Alongside the coastal paths, it is a historic landmark in the area.

Playa de San Antonio is a small, shell-shaped bay. It can be reached on foot from Hotel Rural Ovio via Oviu and Picones. The cliffs at Cuevas del Mar contain hollows formed by sea erosion.

Regional Cuisine and Festival Programme

On 14 August 2026, local gastronomy and regional products were exhibited and sold at MercĂĄu Sabor de la Huerta in Oviu. The programme included the preparation, tasting and sale of fabada and Asturian pote.

The 2026 programme for the Fiesta del Santo Ángel de la Guarda in Oviu included a procession, regional dances and the danza prima. These dated culinary and cultural events complement the landscape and route themes when planning a trip.
