The beach, coastal path and local traditions offer different perspectives on Barro. Playa de Barro is 250 metres long, and a section of the Senda Costera also passes through the village. Barro can therefore be understood both through a specific beach and through a coastal path that runs through the region.

Playa de Barro: Beach and facilities

Playa de Barro is a 250-metre-long beach with golden sand in a semi-urban setting. Two small offshore islands separate it from the neighbouring Playa de Sorraos; at low tide, the two beaches are connected.

You can snorkel at Playa de Barro, where the water is considered very clear. You can reach the beach by car. Facilities at the beach include lifeguard service, toilets, parking, showers and places to eat.

The beach also has an access ramp and accessible toilets; a defibrillator is located at the lifeguard service. Check locally before you travel, as facilities may change.

The Senda Costera through Barro

The Senda Costera runs for approximately 65 kilometres from Bustio to Playa de GuadamĂa, along the entire coast of Llanes. The route is divided into five sections. The fourth section is the one that runs through Barro: it passes behind Playa de Sorraos and then continues to the junction in the village.

For orientation, the overall route and its local stretch are two different scales: the roughly 65 kilometres describe the coastal route between its endpoints, while the fourth section runs through Barro. If you plan to walk there, check local trail conditions before setting out.

Film history and the San Roque tradition

Playa de Barro served as a filming location for El Portero by Gonzalo Suárez, Historia de un Beso by José Luis Garci, and the television series La Señora. Visitors interested in film locations will find a cultural connection directly linked to the beach.

The Pendón de Barro is a large red banner that leads the San Roque procession. An August 2025 report describes it as having been carried in the procession for more than 200 years. During the festival in honour of Saint Roch, the L’Alloru bagpipe band accompanies the procession; future festival programmes may differ.

Landscape and routes in the wider area

A limestone outcrop stretches between the villages of Barro, Balmori, Quintana, Bricia and Niembro. This means the landscape extends beyond the beach, encompassing several villages between which this geological formation stretches.

The Camino de Santiago also has its own regional connection: the parish of Barro is one of the two parishes in the Celorio Valley through which the route passes on its way through the municipality of Llanes. Barro therefore brings together several themes: the specific coastal path through the village, the Camino in relation to the valley’s parishes, and the landscape between the villages mentioned above.
