A stay in Canfranc-Estación can be tailored to different interests: the Estación Internacional represents the town’s railway history, while trails and visitor attractions bring nature, landscapes and buildings into focus.

Railway station history and architectural styles

The Estación Internacional de Canfranc was once Spain’s largest railway station. On 6 March 2002, the Government of Aragón granted it protected status as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monument category. The station is therefore not only a reference point in the town’s history, but also protected cultural heritage with clearly defined historical significance.

Another architectural feature is the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Pilar. Its floor plan is fan-shaped; the curved façade wall symbolically recalls the pilgrim’s scallop shell of the Camino de Santiago. The station and church thus offer different ways to explore culture and architecture: the historical significance of a railway station on the one hand, and a distinctive architectural style with a religious and symbolic reference on the other.

Mountain trails and nature

The GR 11.1 reaches Canfranc Estación through forests and old orchards. The route then passes north of the railway tunnel entrance on its way towards Canal Roya. The trail therefore connects a wooded approach with another section that passes a notable structure. As this is a seasonal offering, check current availability before setting out.

The Bunkers Route offers a different focus: it runs along sections of the NR 111 and 112 resistance centres. Near the path to Picaubé, which is linked to the Paseo de los Melancólicos, there is a large group of defensive positions. As trail conditions can change, it is advisable to check them before setting out. This route can thus be distinguished from the more landscape-focused description of the GR 11.1.

If you are interested in plants and trees, you can include the Arboretum’s botanical trail in your plans. There you can observe tree species found in the mountains of Canfranc and the Pyrenees. This offers a different perspective from the trails: rather than a route through forests and orchards, the focus here is on observing different tree species.

Visitor attractions and planning your time

The A Lurte Interpretation Centre explains the dangers of natural hazards in the mountains and the changes made to the Valle de los Arañones for the construction of the Estación Internacional de Canfranc. It therefore looks at both the challenges posed by the mountain landscape and its transformation in connection with the construction of the station.

The Sala Museo del LSC in the Casa de los Abetos features educational videos, explanatory panels and examples from experiments. For the period from 18 July to 30 December 2026, 60-minute self-guided visits are offered through the Oficina de Turismo de Canfranc. If you are planning a visit after this period, check the latest information again.

A historical walking tour of the Estación Internacional lasts about one to one and a quarter hours and has been adapted to be accessible. An interpretive mountain hike to the avalanche protection structures on the slopes of Canfranc Estación is also offered as a half-day tour with a moderate to low difficulty level. The time frames differ considerably: the self-guided museum visit lasts one hour, the historical tour a little longer, and the mountain hike half a day. This lets you weigh up the options according to your available time and interests, without treating their different formats as equivalent.

When planning your stay, it is therefore worth considering both what you would like to discover and the time requirements involved. Railway station history and architecture offer a different focus from nature observation or trails to defensive positions and avalanche protection structures. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can match these priorities to your travel dates and choose the visitor attractions that fit your plans.
