The Pozas de San Martín and the Barranco de Sieste give La Valle a strong connection to nature, while its historic landmarks range from a former boundary line to Castillo de Morcat. When choosing a destination, it is worth considering the water landscape, the character of the trails and the cultural sites separately: the activities available differ considerably in duration and condition. The settlement pattern includes individual houses standing at a distance from one another.

Water Landscapes and Seasonal Swimming

The Barranco de Sieste runs along the left-hand boundary of La Valle. Near La Valle, it is suitable for swimming in summer; conditions may vary depending on water levels. The Pozas de San Martín are emerald-green pools on white rock. The stream and the pools therefore offer different points of reference for a stay by the water: here, the Barranco running along the boundary; there, the striking pools on pale rock. Swimming is explicitly a seasonal option, not a year-round description.

Hiking Routes by Duration and Character

Route 6 – El Confesionario from San Martín starts at the Pozas de San Martín car park in La Valle and passes through the pools to the Cascada del Confesionario. It is 5.5 km long, has an elevation gain of 250 m and is rated moderate. The stated duration is three to four hours. This gives you a clear idea of the time required for this hike. Check local trail conditions before setting out.

Another route option is the ZZ-020 “Journey to the Barranco de Sieste.” It includes an optional out-and-back detour to the “Confessional” waterfall. The detour is therefore an addition, not a required part of the route. This distinguishes its route description from Route 6, which explicitly passes through the Pozas to the Cascada del Confesionario.

The path to the Ermita de la Virgen de la Sierra also has its own character: from Latorrecilla, a steep, densely overgrown path leads to the Ermita in about 50 minutes. This time estimate differs considerably from the three to four hours for Route 6. The Ermita is no longer in use and is in poor condition; this limitation should be taken into account when planning your destination.

Houses and Historic Landmarks

Individual houses, standing far apart from one another, shape La Valle. Casa Monclús has a private oratory. These two details describe different aspects of the place: the scattered arrangement of the houses and a distinctive architectural feature of a named house. The oratory is private; the description identifies it as a feature of Casa Monclús.

In the area around La Valle, the Almazara stands on the left bank of the Barranco de La Valle and is heavily dilapidated. Castillo de Morcat controlled the La Valle area. The Ermita de la Virgen de la Sierra, in turn, lies on the former boundary between Guaso, Latorrecilla and La Valle de Boltaña. Together, these places point to different historical contexts: a former boundary line, the castle’s control of the area, and the location of a heavily dilapidated mill on the Barranco de La Valle. The Barranco de La Valle and the Barranco de Sieste are distinct geographical references.

Getting There and Finding Your Way

La Valle can be reached via the road to Sieste. Access to the La Valle and San Martín area passes the Monasterio de Boltaña on the way to Sieste; before the village, turn left and follow the signs to San Martín. At the end of the road, you reach the Condado de San Martín. Check road conditions locally before setting out.

Three specific differences are especially useful when choosing between the destinations: Route 6 connects the Pozas with the Cascada del Confesionario and takes three to four hours; the path to the Ermita leads from Latorrecilla through steep, densely overgrown terrain and ends at a site in poor condition; the ZZ-020 mentions an optional waterfall detour. If you are considering La Valle as a starting point for your trip, you can weigh up the natural attractions, trail conditions and historic sites without conflating the different route descriptions.
