Valencina de la Concepción combines an extensive archaeological area with striking details at individual structures. The area covers more than 400 hectares and is one of the largest settlements of the 3rd millennium BC. On the Iberian Peninsula, it is one of the most significant centers of megalithism. It is listed as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) in the Archaeological Zone category. This means the focus is not only on a single dolmen, but also on a broader prehistoric context.

The Dolmens of Pastora and Matarrubilla

The Dolmen de la Pastora is a tholos with a circular chamber approximately 2.5 meters in diameter and a corridor more than 45 meters long. Its entrance faces the sunset. The shape of the chamber, the length of the corridor and the orientation make different aspects of the structure tangible: its internal layout, its extent and the entrance’s distinctive orientation.

The Dolmen de Matarrubilla has a chamber-and-corridor layout with a maximum length of 32 meters. The chamber contains a large, carved marble block with a depression on its upper surface. It may have served as an altar or sacrificial table. Alongside the architecture, this dolmen also raises questions about the possible function of a specific object—a theory that remains explicitly open to interpretation.

Museum and visitor planning

The Museo Municipal is located in the Casa de la Cultura on Plaza de España. It displays archaeological remains dating from 2500 to 1500 BC. The museum in Valencina also offers visits to the Dolmen de la Pastora. Advance reservations are required for visits to the Museo de Valencina and the dolmens to secure a place. Before your trip, check the booking procedure, availability and current arrangements for visits.

Romería de Torrijos and the estate

The Romería de Torrijos is recognized as a Fiesta de Interés Turístico de Andalucía. During this annual pilgrimage, Nuestra Señora de la Estrella Coronada is taken by cart to the Hacienda de Torrijos on Sunday morning. The Capilla del Santísimo Cristo de Torrijos is located there. The hacienda is a former Arab military fortress with walls and towers. The tradition thus connects a religious occasion with a historic building. Event details may vary from year to year, so check the date and program for the relevant edition before your trip.

Church, art and local specialties

The Iglesia Nuestra Señora de la Estrella dates from the 17th century. The Sagrario Chapel contains altarpieces from 1609 and works by Andrés de Ocampo and Antonio Pérez. These specific details complement the prehistoric evidence with art history and ecclesiastical architecture.

Traditional local specialties include Mantas doblás, a fine pastry from Valencina de la Concepción. The town is also part of the Ruta del Mosto through the Seville countryside. In addition to archaeology, visitors can therefore include a local sweet treat and a connection to the wider region in their travel plans.
