Espartinas offers several distinct reasons to enjoy a cultural and scenic stay: the Conjunto Monumental Virgen de Loreto brings together remarkable buildings, a greenway runs alongside the RĂo Pudio, and local wine production offers another point of interest. Plan your day around your interests, whether architecture and local history, a route or regional products.

Loreto heritage and Sevillian architecture

The Conjunto Monumental Virgen de Loreto includes a church, a monastery, a hacienda with a winery, and the Torre Mocha. The Loreto complex in Espartinas is recognised as a Bien de Interés Cultural. Its protected surroundings include an area of traditional agricultural use. The architectural value of the complex is physically and visually closely connected to the cultivated land; this relationship is also part of the landscape of the protected area.

Typical Sevillian tiles can still be seen on the walls of the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción. The Iglesia de la Asunción has Mudéjar origins and a Baroque high altar. Another specific detail of religious art is Espartinas’s Simpecado: made in 1957 in the Sevillian Baroque style, it features gold thread on green velvet. At its centre is a polychrome image of the Virgin, carved from cypress wood.

Routes and local history

The Vereda de la Carne connects Espartinas and Coria del RĂo and is now a greenway along the RĂo Pudio. Check route conditions before your trip. The Keicho-Hasekura Route is a one-hour alternative route that can be combined with the main route through the municipality of Espartinas; check its practical details in advance as well.

The Keicho-Hasekura Route focuses on the stay at the Monasterio de Loreto of the Japanese samurai Hasekura Tsunenaga and his delegation, known as the KeichĹŤ Embassy. They stayed there for thirteen months in 1616. The two routes offer different considerations for planning: the Vereda focuses on the connection between two places and the river, while the Keicho-Hasekura Route offers a one-hour duration and can be combined with the municipal route.

You can also plan your journey by public transport: Espartinas can be reached from Seville’s Plaza de Armas bus station on routes 166, 167, 168 and 102A. Check bus information before setting off, as transport details can change.

Haciendas, museum and further insights

The Hacienda de San Rafael, known as Casa de las Monjas, is now Espartinas’s main civic centre. It includes, among other facilities, the municipal library and an exhibition hall. As access arrangements may change, check them before visiting.

The Hacienda Nuestra Señora de los Remedios, known as Guardiola, is open, along with the study hall. Visitors can see the outdoor areas, working courtyard, machinery and gardens; check visiting arrangements in advance. The former wine press at Hacienda Guardiola retains its original appearance and allows visitors to learn about the region’s traditional agricultural process and buildings of this kind. We also recommend checking the current arrangements for this visit.

The Museo Didáctico de la Imaginería permanently displays a reconstruction of a religious sculpture workshop from Spain’s Golden Age. Access is currently limited to groups. Its educational programme also includes a practical workshop where school groups apply polychrome sculpture techniques. Check access arrangements as you plan your visit.

A June 2022 report described riding lessons at the Centro HĂpico Riopudio in Espartinas, where children begin by learning to handle ponies and practising basic exercises. According to the report, from the age of seven lessons include riding focused on classical dressage, progressing to advanced riding with possible professional ambitions. Confirm in advance whether visitors can take part today.

Wine production and Holy Week

The Bodegas Fragata, Loreto and Patacabra produce mostos and wines in Espartinas. If you would like to plan your trip around the producers, check their availability in advance.

Domingo de Resurrección is considered the main day of Holy Week in Espartinas and has been recognised as a Fiesta de Interés Turístico de Andalucía by the Andalusian tourism authority. During the procession, the Virgen de los Dolores is accompanied, without a canopy, by the 17th-century processional monstrance. If you plan your trip around the event, check the dates and programme, as arrangements may change from year to year.
