Brenes lies on the banks of the Guadalquivir, surrounded by orange and olive groves. Grain and peaches are also grown in this fertile agricultural landscape. The river, farming and the town’s cultural heritage offer different ways to explore nature and history on your trip.

River Landscape and the Ruta del Azahar

The Ruta del Azahar is a circular walking route with the itinerary Seville–Brenes–return to Seville. In Brenes, it runs for 8 km from Parque de la Chirritana to Plaza Primero de Mayo, by the town hall. The route reaches the Guadalquivir and a riverside woodland of great scenic value. The 2022 route description also mentions a diverse range of wildlife, including hoopoes, red-necked nightjars, kingfishers, mallards and purple herons. Trail conditions can change; check them before setting out.

The banks of the Guadalquivir near Brenes can be explored on foot or by bicycle; hiking in the natural landscape is also possible. Fishing is another recreational activity to consider on the river. Alongside the circular route, you’ll have other ways to experience the riverside landscape.

Architecture, Craftsmanship and Local History

Construction of the Church of the Immaculate Conception was begun in the 14th century by the archbishops of Seville. Inside are a Mudéjar coffered ceiling and Baroque works of art. An altarpiece houses Nuestra Señora del Rosario, the patron saint of Brenes. Architecture, art and religious devotion come together in this building.

Gold embroidery is another local tradition. Practised for more than a hundred years, it focuses particularly on religious textiles. Local workshops have completed important commissions for brotherhoods across Spain. This craft connects a tradition from Brenes with patrons far beyond the town.

The Hacienda de San Sebastián, dating from the late 17th century, is part of the area’s agricultural history. It was used to produce olive oil; its façade and the tower of the oil mill have survived. The chimney known as the Torre de la Cigüeña also remains and is regarded as evidence of Brenes’s industrial past. The place name “Casas del Rey” is considered an indication of the area’s medieval past.

Festivals and Travel Planning

San Sebastián remains the focal point of an annual pilgrimage held around the saint’s feast day. The Feria de Octubre takes place as part of the celebrations in honour of Nuestra Señora del Rosario. It begins on the Wednesday after the procession of the patron saint and ends on Sunday; the dates fall roughly between 7 and 10 October. If you’d like to plan your trip around the Feria, check the dates for your intended travel year.

When looking for a hotel in Brenes, you can start by deciding what you’re most interested in: the Ruta del Azahar and the banks of the Guadalquivir offer nature and outdoor activities, while the church, gold embroidery and hacienda provide insights into art, craftsmanship and agricultural history. This will help you decide which side of the town you’d like to shape your trip.
