An extensive network of trails winds through dehesa landscapes and typical Mediterranean scrubland. Other highlights include a signposted stage of the Camino de Santiago, a public observatory and seasonal visits to watch the deer rut. Almadén de la Plata offers a variety of nature and cultural themes to choose from according to your travel interests.

Landscape between the Viar and Cala Rivers

Almadén de la Plata lies between the Viar and Cala rivers, in the heart of the Parque Natural de la Sierra Morena sevillana. The municipal trail network crosses dehesa and Mediterranean scrubland and is suitable for hiking, cycling and horseback riding. This broad range of activities differs from a single, precisely measured route: you can focus on the landscape and the activity of your choice, without assuming that every trail offers the same kind of outing.

The area also has a geological designation: Berrocal de Almadén de La Plata is a geological site of this landscape type in the Sierra Norte de Sevilla Geopark. The El Berrocal estate is about 4 km from Almadén de la Plata and includes the Cortijo El Berrocal visitor center. Both offer ways to explore landscape and nature, without linking them to a specific route.

Trails, a Pilgrim Stage and Nature Watching

Stage 4 of the Camino de Santiago runs from Almadén de la Plata to Monesterio and is 34.5 km long. The signposted route passes through Almadén to the Plaza de Toros and continues toward Cerro de los Covachos and El Real de la Jara. For planning purposes, this is a clearly measured trail with named places; the municipal network, by contrast, offers several activities in the landscape.

Another trail starts in Almadén de la Plata, leads to the Arroyo de la Calzadilla and continues to a gorge with a waterfall and small cascades. If you would like to include a viewpoint in your outing, there is a recreation area there; you can also make the ascent by vehicle.

The observatory at Mirador de La Traviesa belongs to the municipality and is open to the public. Nature enthusiasts can also join guided deer-rut visits in Parque Natural El Berrocal. These are offered from mid-September to the end of October, usually take place early in the morning and last 2.5 to 3 hours. If you have a particular date in mind, check the schedule and availability in advance.

Archaeological Traces

Archaeological sites offer further historical perspectives. At one site, 182 rock-art locations were discovered along a 520-meter stretch. A Roman marble quarry dating from the 1st century AD was fully excavated and made into a museum for public presentation.

One site includes a Bronze Age cist-grave necropolis and a settlement from the first half of the 2nd millennium BC; the site has been turned into a museum and designated Spanish historical heritage. Remains from the Neolithic, Chalcolithic and late Roman imperial period have also been found at an archaeological site. These periods give the archaeological themes different historical depths.

Local Produce and an Event

An event dedicated to Iberian pork takes place from Friday to Sunday in the third week of March; the exact dates may vary from year to year. The program includes exhibitions of local products and handicrafts, historical photo exhibitions and visits to the main sights. There are also tastings of a Moliner-style breakfast and ham. If you would like to plan your trip around the event, check the dates for the relevant year.

When choosing accommodation, you can start by deciding which themes will be the focus of your trip: trails and landscapes, a particular pilgrim stage, nature watching, or archaeological and culinary discoveries. The destinations and activities mentioned vary in season, duration and character; for seasonal deer watching and the March event, be sure to check the relevant dates.
