At Iznate’s main square stands the Mudéjar church of San Gregorio VII, built in the late 16th century. Together with vineyards, almond trees and olive groves, it showcases two distinctive aspects of the town: a history of architecture that can be read in a specific building, and a landscape shaped by agriculture. The Mirador Iznate-Marruecos adds views of the mountains, the Mediterranean and the eastern Costa del Sol.

Townscape and lanes

A walk through Iznate takes you along steep streets adapted to the uneven terrain, past white façades decorated with flowerpots, small squares and secluded corners. The white houses and winding streets evoke the town’s Andalusian past. The impression is not shaped by any one building alone: the layout of the streets and the squares are also part of the townscape. If you enjoy exploring on foot, you’ll find a variety of architectural vantage points, from the façades to the small squares.

Church and historical landmarks

The church has a single-nave layout and a wooden ceiling. It also houses a painting of Saint Francis of Paola attributed to the painter Zurbarán. San Gregorio VII therefore offers a chance to distinguish between its architectural classification, a specific construction detail and a work of art. Other named historical sites include the Fuente del Encime, also called Fuente de los Tres Deseos, built during Muslim rule, and the Fuente Blasonada in Plaza de la Virgen de los Dolores. It is named after the coat of arms of the Marquesado de Campos, which adorns it.

Views and regional connections

The viewpoint is at the highest point in the town and offers views of the Sierra Tejeda Almijara, the Mediterranean and the eastern Costa del Sol. On clear days, the Moroccan coast and the Atlas Mountains may also be visible. The distant view of Morocco is therefore explicitly dependent on clear conditions. Iznate is also part of the Ruta del Sol y del Aguacate. This route connects the town with Rincón de la Victoria, Macharaviaya, Vélez-Málaga, Benamocarra and Benamargosa, providing a regional connection beyond the town itself.

Muscat grapes and event dates

Iznate’s patron saint festivities coincide with Holy Week and combine religious events with leisure activities. The Semana Cultural de Iznate is a cultural and leisure week with an extensive programme of events; it includes the Día de la Uva Moscatel, described as a festival of provincial tourist interest. It takes place every year in early August and begins with a thanksgiving mass for the fruits of the previous harvest. In the afternoon, a gastronomic route winds through Iznate’s main streets; details of the route may change in future editions. If you’re travelling specifically for Muscat Grape Day, check the exact date in advance.
