Algarrobo combines a Moorish-influenced townscape inland with a municipality that also includes coastal towns and a beach. The town itself stretches across the slopes of two hills, offering views of the Mediterranean. On the coast, Mezquitilla has preserved its fishing-village tradition alongside tourism. Algarrobo is also one of the seven municipalities on the Ruta del Sol y del Vino, which connects the coast with the inland area.

Townscape and Coast

Playa Algarrobo is an urban beach within the municipality. It is 800 metres long and 20 metres wide, with a surface consisting mainly of pebbles and dark sand. Beach facilities include bus access, parking, toilets, showers, restaurants, a lifeguard station and amphibious chairs for people with reduced mobility. As services may change, check which ones are currently available before your visit.

The difference between inland Algarrobo and the coastal towns gives the municipality a varied character, without making the two areas alike. Mezquitilla's long-standing fishing-village tradition sits alongside tourism, while Playa Algarrobo combines its urban setting with specific facilities. If you are looking for accommodation in Algarrobo, it may therefore help to first consider whether the inland townscape or the coastal area is more important for your trip.

Buildings and Archaeological History

Among the notable buildings is the Iglesia de Santa Ana. It was founded in 1505 and dates from the late 16th or early 17th century. Its floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross; inside, there are three naves and ceilings with Mudéjar timber framing. The Ermita de San Sebastián on the Egido hill is surrounded by gardens. Because of its poor condition, it was rebuilt in 1976 as an exact copy of the original 16th-century building.

The coastal fortifications also tell different stories of construction. The Torre Derecha, also known as the Torre Nueva, is an 18th-century coastal fort. It was used to monitor the coast and transmit smoke signals. The Torre Ladeada, by contrast, is a Christian structure dating from the period after the Reconquista: it is 10 metres high and leans at an angle of 18°. The classification and differing functions of these buildings add distinct historical and architectural dimensions to the town's history.

Archaeological evidence adds to this picture. Trayamar is a 7th-century BC Phoenician necropolis, where the transition from cremation to inhumation can be traced. Morro de Mezquitilla has evidence of settlement from the Phoenician Archaic period, as well as later Roman remains. The structures described there include square dwellings and ovens. While Trayamar mainly reveals burial practices, Morro de Mezquitilla is notable for settlement remains from different periods.

Festivals and Local Traditions

The RomerĂa de San Isidro is a long-standing celebration kept alive across generations. Its 25th edition was held in 2026. That year's programme included a procession carrying the saint to Parque de la Vega and a traditional horse race with ribbon rings. Individual programme items may vary from one edition to the next.

The Fiesta de la Quema commemorates 24 September 1811. On that day, the people of Algarrobo prevented French troops from burning down the town. The local festivities therefore centre both on the continuing RomerĂa and on the memory of a specific event in the town's history.

Dishes from Algarrobo

Torta de Algarrobo is an oil-based pastry of Arab origin and is considered the municipality's most representative culinary product. Traditional cuisine also includes Ajoblanco, Gazpacho, Potaje algarrobeño and Choto in Sauce. Along the coast, Sardine Espetos and Moraga de pescado are among the dishes mentioned. The culinary selection thus ranges from a distinctive local sweet to dishes associated with the coast.

Visitors choosing Algarrobo for a stay can focus on the townscape, architectural and archaeological history, festival traditions, cuisine or coast.
