Estepona combines a long city beach with coastal paths, botanical discoveries and a wide range of cultural themes. You can tailor your stay to your own interests, whether that means spending time on the coast, going for a walk or focusing on nature and history.
Beach and Coastal Paths
Playa de La Rada is 2,630 metres long. Its facilities and amenities include toilets, accessible facilities, showers, parking, walkways, beach bars and water sports. The variety ranges from practical amenities to activities on the water. If you enjoy walking or want to plan some exercise, the Senda Litoral offers a different perspective on the coast: walks and sports activities follow the seafront, with views of beaches as well as sunrises and sunsets.
The Bulevar offers its own distinctive experience. This landscaped avenue, open to pedestrians, forms a transition between the city and the sea and invites you to take a stroll. It also features planted garden areas and a cycle path. While the Senda Litoral focuses on the coastline and beaches, the Bulevar combines a pedestrian perspective with landscaped green spaces and a cycle path.
Botany and Views
The Parque Botánico-Orquidario presents a subtropical forest. Vertical gardens, a pond with water lilies and a 15-metre-high waterfall are part of its design, and three glass domes also define the site. The orchid collection is another focus: more than 4,000 orchids on display represent over 1,500 orchid species. This gives your visit a clear botanical focus, complemented by the garden’s varied features and water elements.
The Mirador del Carmen offers a different kind of view. Its observation tower provides panoramic views of Estepona and the Mediterranean. The city thus offers a range of different experiences: landscaped garden areas at the Parque Botánico-Orquidario and views over the city and sea from the Mirador.
Art, History and Collections
For public art, the Ruta de Murales takes you to artistic murals on building façades in different neighbourhoods and areas of Estepona; the route can be explored on foot. The Ruta de Poesías offers a literary focus, presenting famous poems in several languages along the streets of the historic old town. Both routes focus on art, but in different forms: murals on façades on one, poems in various languages on the other.
The museums explore very different aspects of the past. The Museo Paleontológico displays original fossils from geological periods represented in Andalusia. These include marine molluscs that are 5 to 3 million years old and come from the Málaga and Estepona basins. The Museo Etnográfico, by contrast, focuses on the way of life, customs and economy of the people of the Estepona region over the past centuries; its collection comprises more than 2,000 ethnographic objects.
The Museo Taurino displays photographs of prominent bullfighters, historic scenes from the arena, posters and matador costumes. The collection also includes heads of bulls killed in historic fights, as well as identifying marks from Spanish and Portuguese breeding farms. Visitors interested in this aspect of history will find exhibits here that differ from those in the natural history and ethnographic collections.
You can also look further back in time: the Necrópolis Prehistórica de Corominas is a megalithic necropolis around 5,000 years old, with five well-preserved tombs. The Ruta Horno de Brea de los Almárgenes ends at a restored tar kiln associated with a former rural craft practised in the pine forests of the Sierra Bermeja. This craft disappeared in the 1960s. The necropolis and the tar kiln therefore represent different historical themes: prehistoric burial sites on the one hand, and a former craft on the other.
When planning your trip, you can first decide whether you want to focus on the coast, botanical themes, art or history. The places and routes described offer different ways to do this, without requiring you to include every theme in your itinerary.
