Canillas de Albaida can be explored through historic buildings and trails with very different characteristics. To help you plan, there is a circular route between two towns, trails through hilly countryside, and a tour lasting around 2.5 to 3 hours. The municipality in the province of Málaga is part of the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama Natural Park; several mountain and hiking trails through the natural park start at the Fábrica de la Luz. This allows you to plan your outings around culture, scenery or a specific tour.
Culture among old roads and festive traditions
For centuries, the Ermita de Santa Ana served as a landmark and lookout post for defending the area. Its original fortified structure was converted into a Christian temple. The Puente Romano also reflects different historical periods: it dates from Roman times and has been rebuilt several times. At the Paraje de las Cuestas, two old Roman roads meet above the Río Turvilla at the bridge.
The small, well-preserved Ermita de San Antón is located in the lower part of Canillas de Albaida. The Antiguo Lavadero is near a natural spring. Another local tradition is part of the Misa del Gallo: the Niño is dressed for the occasion. These places and customs offer something for different interests, from historic buildings to living festive traditions.
The Festividad de San Antón is celebrated on the weekend closest to 17 January. The Romería includes horses, mules and pets; the animals are then traditionally blessed. Visitors are also invited to sample grilled meat, chorizo, morcilla and drinks. As the programme and food on offer may vary, check the dates and announcements for your trip around the festival.
Hikes with different highlights
The “Los Molinos” Río Turvilla circular route connects Canillas de Albaida and Árchez. It starts at the Canillas de Albaida Tourist Office in El Llano de la Fuente, where vehicles can be parked. A distinctive feature of the route is a series of metal walkways, around 350 metres long, over an old irrigation channel. The trail also leads to Plaza Nuestra Señora del Rosario, where the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Expectación is located. Check current trail conditions and parking before setting out.
The Santa Ana–Fábrica de la Luz route passes through hilly terrain with olive, orange and avocado trees. At the Fábrica de la Luz, you will find waterfalls on the Arroyo del Melero and lush vegetation. The ruined building of the former factory once housed turbines for generating hydroelectric power. Another route, Fábrica de la Luz–Puerto Blanquillo, leads to a water source that supplies Canillas de Albaida.
The Puerto Blanquillo–Cerro Lucero route is listed as approximately 5 kilometres long, taking around 2.5 to 3 hours, with a moderate difficulty level. It reaches a summit 1,739 metres high. The vegetation there has almost disappeared because of the sandy terrain. This tour therefore differs from routes whose descriptions highlight watercourses, vegetation or man-made trail features, with its summit and open, sandy landscape. Conditions may change; check the current state of the route before setting out.
Getting there and practical information
The A-7206 road runs from Torrox via Cómpeta to Canillas de Albaida. The Punto de Información Turística is open around the clock and offers visitor information, a rest area, a place to charge mobile phones and running water. If you rely on any of these services, check availability in advance; you should also take road conditions into account before travelling.
The Fábrica de la Luz recreation area has barbecue spots, tables, benches, toilets and water fountains. Camping is also possible there, and the area is the starting point for several mountain and hiking trails through the natural park. For access via the forest track, vehicles with fewer than ten seats can reach the Fábrica de la Luz, as the track is designed for them. Check access conditions before driving there and the current availability of facilities.
If you are looking for a hotel in Canillas de Albaida, choose one based on the outings you plan to take. Compare the location of the specific accommodation with the starting points and places on your own itinerary. This allows culture, hikes and practical travel considerations to inform your decision without assuming a specific connection between your accommodation and any excursion destination.
