Churches and historic buildings, pilgrimage traditions and olive oil experiences give Villanueva Del Arzobispo a varied character. Those planning a trip can get to know the town through its architecture and history, explore offerings connected with San Juan de la Cruz or plan an excursion into the Natural Park landscape. The different themes have distinct focuses—from local history to tastings.

Historic buildings and museums

In the historic centre stands the Parroquia de San Andrés, designated a Bien de Interés Cultural and part of Spain’s Historical Heritage. Its history dates back to a medieval fortress. The building retains Renaissance, Baroque, Gothic and Neoclassical elements. The church thus brings together several periods in a single building rather than representing just one style. The Convento de Santa Ana is also part of the old town’s history: it was founded there in 1540.

The Casa de los Arcos offers a different architectural detail: its courtyard is designed in the Nasrid style and inspired by the aesthetics of the palaces of the Alhambra in Granada. At the Iglesia de la Vera Cruz, documented points of interest range from the building itself to its art and craftsmanship. Its chapel dates from the 17th century; the church also houses a figure of Christ created by Mariano Benlliure in 1946. It rests on a silver cross dating from 1899.

The Plaza de Toros is a monument in the Neo-Mudéjar style dating from 1928. The municipal tourism offering includes guided visits inside the arena; booking conditions may vary. The Museo Taurino is separate: it is housed in the former stables of the local bullring. Its exhibition includes texts, photographs and audiovisual materials on the bullring’s more than 90-year history, as well as videos, models and publications on local bullfighting history. Those interested can find not only the building itself here, but also an insight into its cultural context.

Opened in 2023, the Museo Etnográfico del Olivar explores the town’s roots and its agricultural culture in connection with extra virgin olive oil. Check access locally before planning a visit. This distinguishes the museum’s focus from that of the historic buildings: here, agriculture and olive oil take centre stage, not the architecture of the old town.

Pilgrimage routes and local traditions

The official stage 0 of the Camino de San Juan de la Cruz runs from Villanueva Del Arzobispo via El Calvario to Beas de Segura, following the original route. This gives trip planners a specific route; no information on walking time or difficulty is provided here. The Santuario also has a cell museum connected with San Juan de la Cruz. Permission from the local parish priest is required to visit it.

The Jornadas Sanjuanistas also reflect the connection with San Juan de la Cruz. They take place from Thursday to Sunday during the second week of June. The programme includes the Villanueva del Arzobispo–Calvario stage, workshops, tastings, discussion sessions, concerts and Masses in honour of the saint. For specific travel dates, it is advisable to check the event schedule. Another opportunity to discover local traditions is the patron saint celebrations in September, which include two pilgrimages and processions in honour of Nuestra Señora de la Fuensanta Coronada.

Nature and olive oil experiences

Villanueva Del Arzobispo is one of the municipalities in the Sierras de Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas Natural Park. A separate excursion destination is Charco del Aceite, also known as Charco de la Pringue, 20 kilometres away. The recreation area lies on the Guadalquivir and includes a natural swimming pool, stone tables, wooden seats and a kiosk bar. The distance makes clear that this destination is outside the town, and offers a different focus from the buildings in the historic centre.

The olive oil theme can also be explored through tasting. Cata y maridaje Los Albacares offers a guided tasting of early-harvest extra virgin olive oils. It includes products from the Sierra, such as pâtés, cured meats, cheese and honey, as well as Vino de la Tierra. The offering also includes Oliba Green Beer, brewed with extra virgin olive oil. Check whether tastings are available before planning your trip. The museum and tasting offer a useful comparison: one explores agricultural culture and the town’s roots, while the other focuses on olive oil and accompanying regional products.

Planning the right stay

Your travel interests can guide your choice of accommodation in Villanueva Del Arzobispo: the old town and its buildings, routes and events connected with San Juan de la Cruz, or olive oil and regional products each offer a different focus. If you want to include several of these, you can take your planned visit dates and the location of the Charco del Aceite excursion destination into account. The bathing area is listed as 20 kilometres away; this does not imply a specific travel time. Planning a suitable stay therefore starts with the places and offerings that matter most to your trip.
