Lepe brings together the history of an important tuna fishing site, Mudéjar architecture and nature trails along the Río Piedras. This gives you a choice of different aspects of the town to focus on when planning your trip: the history of the almadraba, pilgrimage traditions or activities in the coastal landscape.
Culture and history in the town centre
The Real de la Almadraba de Nueva Umbría in Lepe is protected as a Site of Cultural Interest in the “ethnological site” category under Decree 484/2015. Until it closed in 1963, it was the most important tuna fishing production site on the coast of Huelva. The history of the almadraba gives the town a distinctive cultural and historical character.
In the centre of Lepe is Plaza de España, where the town’s main streets meet. Iglesia Santo Domingo de Guzmán stands on the square. It originally dates from the 16th century, is built in the Gothic-Mudéjar style and was declared a historic-artistic monument in 1985. The freestanding Capilla San Cristóbal adds another example of Mudéjar architecture: it also dates from the 16th century. During its restoration, parts of the original wall and vault paintings were uncovered or restored.
Other cultural sites each have their own character. Casa Museo Castillo de Lepe has a library with more than 3,000 volumes. In Parque del V Centenario, there is a sculpture ensemble created by Francisca Abreu. It is a tribute to the sailors from Lepe who took part in the discovery of America.
Pilgrimage traditions and local food culture
The Romería de la Bella takes place around the second weekend in May; the exact dates vary from year to year. In May 2026, it was recognised as a Fiesta de Interés Turístico de Andalucía, a festival of tourist interest in Andalusia. Cruz Primera is also part of the pilgrimage tradition: it has always been an obligatory stop on the pilgrimage of the Virgen de la Bella.
Another local story is told by Zampuzo El Rata. Founded in 1932, it has a history spanning three generations. The proprietor makes the wine himself; various dishes or tapas are offered from time to time. If you are planning to eat there, bear in mind that food is only occasionally available.
Nature and activities along the Río Piedras
Flecha de Nueva Umbría is an almost 15-kilometre-long sand spit at the mouth of the Río Piedras. It is considered a geomorphological formation unique in the entire Spanish national territory. In the Marismas del Río Piedras and Flecha de Nueva Umbría Natural Area, you can go hiking, take part in environmental education activities and watch birds. Alongside culture, the landscape and nature observation are also options for your stay.
The Puerto de El Terrón has facilities for water sports; rod fishing and trolling are possible there. You can also take a motorboat upstream through the natural area and along Flecha de Nueva Umbría. Operators and timetables may change, so check in advance whether and when this trip is available.
Walking and cycling routes
The Ruta de la Tavirona follows a former railway embankment, mostly on compacted earth. It is considered easy and is suitable for walking, cycling or exercising. The route, a coastal trail on the Via Verde Litoral, can be accessed next to Lepe’s former railway station. This description identifies the access point rather than specifying a named starting point for the entire route.
The Ruta Parque de los Cabezos is laid out differently: it is an easy circular route offering views of a wooded coastal area and wide stretches of beach. The Sendero Azul at Playa de La Antilla is just over three kilometres long. This path for pedestrians and cyclists links the developed beach area with the dune trail in the Marismas de Nueva Umbría Natural Area.
When choosing a route, you can compare the features explicitly mentioned: the Tavirona route includes information about its surface and different uses, while the circular layout and views are the main features of the Cabezos route. The Sendero Azul, in turn, is characterised by its connection between the developed beach area and the dune trail. These differences can help you choose a route to suit the way you want to get around.
