Almonte brings together striking landscapes, a rich cultural history and vibrant traditions. This means you can explore the town from several perspectives when planning your trip: through Doñana’s natural environment, museums and architectural heritage, or pilgrimage routes and recurring festivities.

Landscape and Getting There

The Acantilado del Asperillo is a geological natural monument in Almonte and part of the Parque Natural de Doñana. It is considered the highest cliff of its kind in Europe. The sandy coastal area of Médano del Asperillo is also located in the western part of the natural park. Its natural viewpoint reaches up to 112 metres above sea level. These two landscape features offer different points of reference for exploring the natural surroundings of Almonte.

The Parque Nacional de Doñana, associated with Almonte, includes dunes, pine forests, marshes, lagoons and wildlife reserves. These landscapes provide habitats for hundreds of bird species and the Iberian lynx. The natural environment ranges from distinctive places such as Asperillo to a diverse protected area encompassing several landscape types.

The A-483 runs from Almonte towards El Rocío and Matalascañas and also provides access to the Doñana area. Check current traffic conditions and any road restrictions before setting off. If you are travelling without your own vehicle, buses to El Rocío or Matalascañas can help you reach the visitor centres of La Rocina, El Acebuche and Palacio del Acebrón, which are located within the municipality of Almonte. Check bus connections and timetables in advance.

Museums and Local History

The Museo de la Villa is housed in an 18th-century olive oil mill known as the Molino de Cepeda. The museum explores aspects of the traditional culture of the municipality of Almonte and its connection with the Parque Nacional de Doñana. Parts of the original mill machinery have been preserved, along with pits and vessels used to store oil. This site brings together the history of the olive oil mill and insights into the municipality’s culture. Check the latest information about public access before your visit.

The municipal Pinacoteca Jorge Camacho has an educational focus. Another cultural venue is the Museo del Vino de Almonte, housed in a wine cellar complex dating from the late 19th century. It explores the history and production of wines from Almonte. Visitors can also sample wine. If you would like to do so, check the latest visitor information in advance.

Traditions and Pilgrimage Routes

The Saca de las Yeguas is a centuries-old tradition held on 26 June. During the event, the Yegüerizos from Almonte drive livestock grazing in various parts of the Espacio Natural de Doñana to Almonte. The procession passes through the town’s streets and ends at the Recinto Ganadero Huerta La Cañada, where traditional horse-handling activities take place. The specific programme may vary from year to year.

La Venida de la Virgen takes place every seven years. During this event, the centre of Almonte hosts the image of the Virgen del Rocío from 20 August until two weeks before the Romería del Rocío. During the nine-month stay, members of more than 100 affiliated brotherhoods make pilgrimages there on weekends; religious and cultural events are also organised. The Saca and La Venida differ in both frequency and purpose, offering distinct insights into Almonte’s traditions.

The Ruta del Traslado offers a different perspective: it follows twelve notable points along a 15-kilometre route between the Ermita de El Rocío and the parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción in the town of Almonte.

Nature and Visitor Attractions

The Museo Forestal de Almonte is set in a 60-hectare pine forest, where visitors can experience the natural surroundings. The Centro de Interpretación del Lince Ibérico guides visitors through six rooms featuring audiovisual media, graphics, texts and dioramas. At the Centro de Interpretación del Pino Piñonero, visitors can explore the inside of a giant pine trunk. The Museo Forestal also has an adventure park with 162 suspended structures at a height of eight metres. The attractions offer different experiences: a pine forest, information about the Iberian lynx, a look inside a tree trunk and elevated structures.

If you choose Almonte as your destination, you can include natural sites, cultural themes and recurring traditions in your plans. First consider which aspects matter most to your trip; the A-483 and the bus connections mentioned above offer different options for travelling to the places and visitor centres described.
