Discover Alfacar through its blend of local history and nature: water from Fuente Grande was once channelled to the Alhambra and the Albaicín, while the La Alfaguara Arboretum now serves as a botanical nature trail. Other highlights include historic buildings, trails with specific timings and the protected Pan de Alfacar. These themes offer different perspectives, from historic water engineering to nature and outdoor activities.
Nature in Sierra de Huétor Natural Park
The Sierra de la Alfaguara is part of Sierra de Huétor Natural Park. The La Alfaguara Arboretum is home to Spanish firs and several centuries-old cedars that stand more than 35 metres tall. The site originated as a former forest nursery and now serves as an arboretum and botanical nature trail. It thus combines its former use with a botanical focus. The Spanish firs and tall cedars are specific points of interest for anyone who wants to take in the plants and landscape during their stay.
Spring, buildings and history
Fuente Grande, also known as Fuente de las Lágrimas, dates back to the 11th century. Its water was channelled to Granada through canals and aqueducts, supplying the Alhambra and the Albaicín. The historical story therefore extends beyond the spring itself: it tells of the water supply to two of Granada’s most important places.
The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción dates from the mid-16th century and stands on the site of a former Arab mosque. The remains of the baths known as the Baños Árabes offer another point of reference in time and architecture. They date from the Andalusi period, are dated to the 13th to 15th centuries, and follow the layout of parallel rooms from the Zirid era. The Arco de Somera was part of Alfacar’s walled settlement and may have been one of its city gates.
A different form of cultural remembrance can be found in Parque Federico García Lorca. It was laid out in 1986 with various fountains, paths and trails; fragments of Lorca’s poems can be seen on the wall around the main square. Taken together, the themes are distinct: the spring and water engineering point to a historic water supply, the church and baths to different eras, and the park to Lorca’s poetry.
Planning trails and activities
The specific details for two trails can help with planning your time. The Puerto Alfacar–Alfaguara circular hiking trail is in the municipality of Alfacar. Its one-way distance is 7,477 metres; this length is specified for a one-way trip. The duration is about two and a half hours, and the route is rated easy. The trail to Cueva del Agua in Alfacar is also described as easy, but takes three hours. These timings make the difference in the time required clear. Check trail conditions before setting out.
Access to Cueva del Agua is closed, so the cave can only be viewed from the outside. Check current access conditions before visiting. Sierra de Huétor Natural Park also has trenches from the Spanish Civil War that visitors can explore, including several improved trails of landscape and historical interest. The park also has recreational areas set up for camping and outdoor sports. Climbing is a possible activity at Puerto de Alfacar; a permit from the natural park is required. The different options therefore vary not only in theme, but also in access and planning requirements.
Pan de Alfacar
Local production is another of the area’s distinctive themes. The protected geographical indication Pan de Alfacar covers traditionally made bollos, roscos, roscas and hogazas. The ingredients used are flour, natural sourdough, water from the Fuente Grande aquifer spring, baker’s yeast and ordinary salt. The sourdough is fermented in the production area. The four types of bread and their ingredients give Pan de Alfacar a tangible connection to local production, without requiring you to plan an additional attraction or activity.
