The dolmen landscape of Gorafe brings together a significant archaeological heritage and an environment shaped by ravines. It also offers astronomical observations and hiking routes with different themes. If you are considering Gorafe as a destination for your stay, you can plan your trip around your priorities: megalithic tombs and their context, geological formations, or observations of the sky. The differences between these options can help you weigh up your interests for your stay.
Dolmens and their dating
The megalithic complex of Gorafe includes 240 dolmens; 198 of them have been studied and catalogued. Most of the dolmens are spread across four megalithic parks: Llano de los Olivares, Las Majadillas, Hoyas del Conquín Alto and Hoyas del Conquín Bajo. These names provide specific reference points for exploring the heritage as you plan your visit.
The dolmens are estimated to be up to around 5,000 years old. A large proportion of these tombs were used from the Late Neolithic (2800–2600 BC) through to the Full Copper Age (2400–2200 BC). These dates therefore describe both a possible maximum age and a period of use for a large proportion of the tombs; they do not represent a single date for every dolmen.
Context at the Interpretation Centre
The Centro de Interpretación del Megalitismo de Gorafe explains the significance of the dolmen complex. It has five exhibition areas featuring audiovisual media. You can download an app via Bluetooth to your mobile phone there, with detailed information about the three routes in the Parque Megalítico de Gorafe. This provides two different ways to explore the site: learn about the megalithic heritage in the exhibition areas, or use route information while out and about.
Gorge and geological formations
The Río Gor has carved a gorge almost 200 metres deep into the geological materials of the glacis of the Sierra de Baza. The landscape along the Vereda Chirlata is also shaped by intense erosion. Its features include arid or steppe-like vegetation, large ravines and multicoloured, nearly horizontal rock layers cut through by rivers. Gorafe’s landscape thus offers aspects that complement its archaeological history.
In the Los Coloraos area, differential erosion has formed steep slopes resembling walls with bastions, topped by a whitish promontory. Los Coloraos is part of the “Desierto de Gorafe” georoute. Access to Los Coloraos requires a four-wheel-drive vehicle; alternatively, several specialist companies offer guided visits to the Gorafe desert.
Observations and hiking routes
The Complejo Astronómico Los Coloraos offers public and private astronomical observations, as well as science outreach activities. This is a distinct focus alongside the trails and archaeological heritage: you can plan your stay around cultural, landscape or astronomical interests without having to combine these themes into a single outing.
The Vereda Chirlata route starts in Gorafe and offers cultural, scenic and sporting experiences. Check the trail conditions before setting out. Another hiking route leads to dolmens on the upper plateau and then to a nearby second concentration of dolmens, from which there are good views over the Río Gor valley. Check the route’s availability before your trip. Another hiking route leads to rock art, or petroglyphs, in the province of Granada; they are considered the oldest in the province and are very well preserved. Here too, it is advisable to check availability before setting out.
Choosing Gorafe as an overnight destination
If you are mainly interested in the history of the dolmens, the four megalithic parks and the Interpretation Centre offer different ways to explore the same subject. For landscapes and outdoor activity, the Vereda Chirlata and the hikes described here are relevant; when visiting Los Coloraos, its specific access requirement should be included in your plans. Astronomical observations are another distinct focus. This lets you choose your destination based on the experiences that matter to you, rather than combining all the themes into a fixed itinerary.
