Illora offers several distinct highlights for a culture-focused trip: the architectural history of the Iglesia de la Encarnación, the Pósito’s changing uses, and events dedicated to roots music and intangible cultural heritage. The municipality also has a viewpoint and a signposted circular route. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, you can first decide whether architectural history, cultural events, or outdoor destinations should be the main focus.
Church, Pósito, and Archaeological Traces
Construction of the Iglesia de la Encarnación in Íllora began in 1541. The construction of the main chapel and tower was overseen by Diego de Siloé. The church is predominantly Renaissance in style, while also showing Gothic influences. It has been listed in the Registro General de Bienes de Interés Cultural since March 20, 1980. Another historical landmark is the Convento de San Pedro de Alcántara: permission to establish it was requested in 1669.
The Iglesia de Santa María de la Encarnación is open for free visits on Saturdays from 18:00 to 22:00 from May to September, and on Thursdays from 16:30 to 20:30 from October to April. Check the opening times before your visit. The Roman bath complex adds archaeological details to the historical picture: it includes a well-preserved furnace, black-and-white tessellated mosaics, and three pools with drainage channels.
The Pósito offers a different perspective on the town’s history. It was built as a granary in the first half of the 18th century. During the Napoleonic occupation, the building served as accommodation for French troops from 1810 to 1812. Today, the Pósito houses the Museo Municipal de Íllora. One building thus traces the progression from granary to military use to its present-day museum spaces.
Landscape and Routes in the Municipality
The Cuesta de Cambril viewpoint lies outside the town center but within the municipality, on the southern slope of the Sierra de Parapanda. The Castillo de Íllora is also visible in the landscape following its restoration. Another landmark is the signposted circular route “Área Recreativa de Alomartes Cerro de los Santos,” which begins near the village of Alomartes. The southern slope provides the geographical setting for the viewpoint; for the circular route, it is the starting point near Alomartes.
From Íllora, you can reach the Parapanda Alomartes recreational area via the A-336 towards Alomartes. At the entrance to the village, turn right; the parking area is then about 900 m away. As road and parking conditions can change, check access before setting out.
Roots Music and Cultural Heritage
Parapanda Folk 2026 in Íllora is the 35th roots music festival. The IX Foro Folk is an annual gathering dedicated to roots music and intangible cultural heritage. The public program includes lectures, discussion sessions, and presentations at the Museo Municipal de Íllora. If you want to plan your trip around a festival or forum date, check the specific dates in advance.
