Villanueva de Córdoba lies amid a Dehesa landscape shaped by holm oaks, considered Europe’s largest Dehesa forest. The town’s attractions range from religious architecture and archaeological remains to festivals and regional cuisine. You can therefore plan your stay around the landscape, local history or seasonal events.
Dehesa and Trails
The Ruta de los Lavaderos leads to former public washing places, offering a vivid insight into a traditional way of life. Nearby, on the Camino de la Serrezuela, there is a wildlife observation point where various animal species can be spotted. The tourist routes in Villanueva de Córdoba include hiking, cycling and horse riding.
Architectural History and Archaeological Remains
Construction of the parish church of San Miguel Arcángel began in 1553; its 35-metre-high bell tower was completed in 1785. Embedded in the façade is a granite trifinium dating to 123 AD. The building thus brings together two different periods: the chronology of the church and the date of the older object.
The Museo de Historia Local is housed in a former railway station built between 1906 and 1907. It displays material from the Lower Paleolithic as well as grave goods from a burial dating to the 3rd millennium BC. Villanueva de Córdoba is also home to 52 megalithic structures belonging to the Los Pedroches dolmen heritage.
The Centro de Interpretación de la Dehesa is located in a restored 19th-century house that was converted into a museum about the natural, economic and cultural life of the Dehesa. A 15-minute documentary explores its history, uses, folklore, work, cuisine and ethnology.
Other buildings make their own architectural statements. The Parroquia de Cristo Rey was built in the 19th century as a chapel for the convent of the Hijas de Cristo Rey. The Parroquia de San Sebastián retains the form of a hermitage, with a single-nave floor plan, pointed arches and a small portico. Completed in 1908, the Casa de Aníbal González combines exposed brick, granite and Modernist details. The municipal bullring is also built of granite and decorated with tiles and wrought-iron elements; it has 3,250 seats.
Festivals and Local Cuisine
The festival calendar offers several distinct occasions. The Festividad de San Miguel on 29 September includes a mass and procession, as well as music, sports and traditional games. On Whit Monday, the image of the Virgen de Luna is brought from the sanctuary to the parish church of San Miguel in Villanueva de Córdoba; in October, it returns to its hermitage. During the October pilgrimage, there is a stop at Pozo de la Legua, where visitors are invited to enjoy Tostaos and wine. The exact programme may vary from year to year.
The Feria del Jamón Ibérico de Bellota de Los Pedroches takes place every year in November. The programme includes a ham-carving competition and a competition to find the best acorn-fed Ibérico ham. Check the exact event dates before planning your trip. The Fiesta de la Matanza y de la Artesanía Popular is also held annually, presenting one of the town’s oldest and most culturally significant traditions. Visitors can sample local food products and learn about the work of exhibiting artisans; the specific programme may vary from year to year.
