Aguilar de la Frontera brings together archaeological remains and vibrant festival traditions with a natural destination nearby: Laguna de Zóñar. There are also activities that explore history, landscape and wine in different ways. Which of these aspects interests you most can shape the focus of your stay.

Laguna de Zóñar and Waterbirds

The visitor centre for Laguna de Zóñar is about four kilometres from Aguilar de la Frontera. The lagoon has been protected since 1984 and is home to significant communities of overwintering and resident waterbirds. The visitor centre has exhibitions, outdoor areas for relaxing and a viewpoint for observing the lagoon. This brings together information about nature and views of the water in one place. If you are planning a visit, it is best to check in advance which facilities and access options will be available at the time.

Archaeological Traces and Local History

Human presence on Cerro del Castillo has been firmly established since the Bronze Age. The site also remained strategically important to Roman and Islamic civilisations. Puerta de Espejo offers another historical point of reference: it dates from the last third of the 15th century and is one of the few surviving remains of the medieval city wall. Together, these two subjects offer different perspectives on time—a long history of human presence and a specific surviving relic from the Middle Ages.

The Centro de Interpretación del Paisaje y la Historia de Aguilar de la Frontera, or CIPHAF for short, brings archaeology and landscape together in a multidisciplinary tour. Themed visits also explore history, archaeology and landscape. The centre is part of the network of tourist development centres of the Ruta Montilla Moriles and Red Vinárea. Those who would like to explore the municipality through play can also consider the Marco-Topo adventure trail: it is designed as a family game and linked to a visit to the area's rich cultural heritage.

Wine and Themed Visits

The Ruta de Arqueólogo is based in Aguilar de la Frontera. It includes a guided tour of the room containing old vintage bottles, the craft workshop, the ageing room, the tasting room and the private archaeological museum. A tasting of six wines and four traditionally made vinegars is also part of the route. At Lagar Los Frailes, the focus is on the wine itself: you can taste wines straight from the barrel and learn about the production process for the full-bodied wines. The two experiences have different emphases—the route combines wine with several stops, while the lagar focuses on barrel tastings and production.

Festivals with Their Own Dates and Traditions

The Semana Santa in Aguilar de la Frontera was recognised as a Festival of National Tourist Interest in 1999 and includes 18 Passion confraternities; this number may change over time. Every year on 2 February, Candelaria is celebrated with a large public bonfire in Plaza de San José. During Corpus Christi, a solemn Eucharistic procession passes through streets decorated with flowerpots, cloths and street altars. The procession route is covered with reeds and rosemary.

The Feria Real is also part of the municipality's festival calendar. It takes place near the ruins of the former Castillo de Poley. The festivals therefore differ both in their occasion and in their specific traditions: from Candelaria's public bonfire, to the elaborately decorated streets for Corpus Christi, to the Semana Santa procession. If you would like to plan your trip around a particular festival, use its date as a guide and check the latest event schedule.

You can choose a focus in Aguilar de la Frontera according to your interests: nature and waterbirds lead to Laguna de Zóñar; archaeology and history to Cerro del Castillo, Puerta de Espejo and CIPHAF; and wine to the tours and tastings. The festival traditions offer their own dates and occasions. When planning your trip, you can start by deciding which of these aspects matters most to you.
