Church architecture and religious traditions, Roman archaeology and activities on the river give Pedro Abad a varied character. Its sights tell stories of different eras and forms of faith; at the Embarcadero, nature watching and water sports are also on offer. When planning your trip, it is worth considering these highlights separately: the historic architecture and festival traditions stand on their own, as do the route to the Roman remains and the opportunities by the river.

Churches and religious heritage

The Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción dates back to the first quarter of the 14th century and retains its original layout with three naves. Its portal dates from the 16th century: a round arch and paneled pilasters are combined with decoration that brings together Gothic and Renaissance motifs. This building offers a chance to see different architectural features while keeping its original design in view.

The Iglesia de Santa Rafaela MarĂa was built in 1950. This historicist church has a single nave and vaulted ceiling; its features include elements made of polychrome marble. A crypt beneath the altar is the burial place of members of Santa Rafaela MarĂa. The Convento de las Esclavas del Sagrado CorazĂłn de JesĂşs is also associated with her: it is her birthplace, and the room where she was born contains an oratory. The convent also houses the Museum of Santa Rafaela MarĂa. Check the current opening arrangements before visiting.

Another religious sight is the Mezquita Basharat. It has a library with numerous Islamic texts in various languages and dialects. It is also considered the first mosque to have been built in Spain in almost eight centuries. The church, birthplace and mosque reflect Pedro Abad’s diverse religious and cultural connections.

Traditions throughout the year

El Prendimiento is a procession held on Maundy Thursday. Its tradition dates back to the 17th century and is based on an older religious mystery play drawn from Gospel texts. The connection to the days of the Passion is also reflected in La Quema de los Judas: this ritual takes place on the evening of Holy Saturday. Grotesque Judas effigies hung in the streets are burned amid the sound of drums, mockery and a lively neighborhood atmosphere. Check the current dates and program when planning your trip.

The Fiesta de Santa Rafaela MarĂa takes place every year on May 18 and includes three days of street celebrations on Calle Madre Filomena. This fixed date differs from the Easter traditions, whose dates follow the moveable calendar. If festival events are an important part of your travel plans, this difference may help you choose when to visit.

Roman traces and route

The ancient Roman city of Sacili Martialis, also known as Sacili Martialium, lies on the Alcurrucén estate in Pedro Abad. It is an archaeological landmark in the area, and marble sculptures are among its known finds. Most of these sculptures apparently belonged to a group of statues dedicated to the Julio-Claudian dynasty. This cautious interpretation is important: the attribution of most pieces is described as probable, not certain.

The Ruta Calzadas Romanas leads to Cerro de Alcurrucén, where numerous remains of the vanished Roman city have been found. The linear route is ten kilometers long, rated as moderate, and can be completed on foot or by bicycle. Its length and difficulty rating give you specific points of reference for planning the trip; check local conditions before setting out.

River landscape and activities at the Embarcadero

The Embarcadero Recreativo y Centro Acuático de Pedro Abad can be reached from the A-4 via exit 367 toward Seville or exit 370 toward Madrid. From there, the Camino de Alcurrucén follows the CO-410 for about five kilometers to the destination. The stated distance is approximate and does not indicate driving time. Check local road conditions before setting off.

Activities at the Embarcadero include canoeing, rowing and paddleboarding, as well as cycling, hiking and birdwatching. Options range from activities on the water to those on land; availability may depend on local conditions and arrangements. The river area lies within the Natura 2000 site of special conservation importance for the middle Guadalquivir and provides habitat for many birds and mammals. Wildlife sightings are seasonal and not guaranteed.

The historic buildings, festival traditions and Roman sites offer different ways to get to know Pedro Abad. The Embarcadero adds a distinct focus on nature and activities. Plan your stay according to whether religious heritage, archaeology or the river landscape is your main interest.
