Monturque combines archaeological heritage with its own perspective on the landscape: the Museo Histórico Local houses collections from prehistory, Iberian and Roman culture, and the Middle Ages; Los Paseíllos and the Roman cisterns offer distinct architectural highlights. From the Mirador de los Paseíllos, panoramic views stretch across the Campiña and towards the nearby Sierras Subbéticas. This lets you explore the town through its collections, architecture, water engineering and landscape, rather than focusing everything on the same attraction.
Collections and archaeological interpretations
The Museo Histórico Local preserves archaeological collections from various periods: prehistory, Iberian and Roman culture, and the Middle Ages. It also serves as an interpretation center for Los Paseíllos, the Cisternas Romanas and the castle. The collection and individual archaeological sites thus form part of a shared thematic framework, even though their respective focuses differ. The collections span a broad period; at Los Paseíllos, the structure of a large building takes center stage, while the cisterns represent Roman water engineering. This distinction helps visitors understand Monturque’s archaeological themes as more than a series of similar sites: they encompass both the breadth of the collections and the architectural features of individual structures.
Los Paseíllos: structure and interpretation
At Los Paseíllos, the focus is on architectural interpretation: the archaeological remains correspond to the ground floor or basement of a large building. Access was probably via a ramp. The structure is also partly cut into the rock and semi-subterranean; it is classified as a cryptoporticus. These features answer different questions: the interpretation as a ground floor or basement suggests its possible place within the building, its position partly embedded in the rock describes its relationship to the terrain, and the term cryptoporticus classifies the remains architecturally. Visitors interested in architecture and archaeological interpretations can therefore distinguish the structure, its location and its classification, rather than treating them as the same feature.
Roman cisterns and views
The Cisternas Romanas de Monturque have a different focus. They were declared a Bien de Interés Cultural in 1996 and are considered a well-preserved example of Roman water engineering on the Iberian Peninsula. These statements complement each other: the year identifies the designation as a cultural asset, while the description as an example of Roman water engineering highlights the architectural focus. In contrast to Los Paseíllos, the focus here is not the interpretation of a large building, but water engineering. Visitors looking to choose a particular theme can thus distinguish between the archaeological interpretation of the building structure and the Roman cisterns.
Landscape and route
The Mirador de los Paseíllos offers a landscape highlight: from here, panoramic views open out across the Campiña and towards the nearby Sierras Subbéticas. The Ruta de Paisajes con Historia Vinum et Aqua brings together architectural heritage, archaeological remains and viewpoints overlooking the surrounding vineyards. The Mirador therefore offers a single panoramic view, while the route combines several themes. Those who want to focus more on the landscape can make the viewpoint a destination in its own right; those who want to explore historic buildings, archaeological remains and vineyard views together will find these themes brought together in the route description. Route conditions may change, so check them in advance if you plan to follow the Ruta de Paisajes con Historia Vinum et Aqua.
Mundamortis 2025
The XVII Jornadas Mundamortis 2025 in Monturque focused on funerary heritage, history and traditions associated with death. The program for this edition included theatrical tours, concerts, conferences, exhibitions and food tastings. This combination brought together theatrical, musical, educational and culinary formats; the information refers to the 2025 program.
