The Palacio Ducal and the adjoining buildings form the historic ensemble of Fernán-Núñez. Two towers are a distinctive feature of the palace, while the ensemble as a whole is protected: Royal Decree 2495/1983 of 13 July 1983 grants it this status. This makes architecture and history central to a stay in Fernán-Núñez.
Palace, Churches and Local History
The present-day Iglesia de Santa Marina de Aguas Santas also tells the story of several construction phases. It dates from the 18th century and stands on the remains of an older church, built shortly after 1385. Its bell tower was originally one of the fortress towers. The church also houses a collection of gold and silverwork, with pieces dating from the 16th to the 20th century. Its architectural history and collection offer different perspectives on the same place of worship across time.
The Ermita de la Caridad dates back to 1525, when the Chapel of Santa Ana was built at its present location. The former Hospicio y Hospital de la Caridad, which cared for the sick and pilgrims, is part of the local history of social institutions. These historic functions add another dimension to the story of life in the town alongside its palace and churches.
The history of wine and culture has its own points of interest. The Tercia, also known as Mesón del Duque, was established in 1675 as a wine shop. The Peña del Mirabrás is a flamenco club, whose stage has helped prominent flamenco artists develop their careers. In Fernán-Núñez, architectural landmarks, historic uses and a named venue for flamenco culture can all be found side by side.
Routes and Traces of the Landscape
Fernán-Núñez is one of nine municipalities on the Ruta del Vino Montilla-Moriles. This membership places the town on a wider themed route. Another connection is the Ruta de las Fuentes, which runs via country estates and springs from Fernán-Núñez to Montemayor. The two routes have different focuses and give your plans a regional or landscape-related dimension, without prescribing a particular itinerary.
A historic irrigation structure can still be seen in Fernán-Núñez today. It once irrigated the local huertas and is no longer in use. The visible structure and its former function make water management another topic alongside architecture and cultural history.
Festivals and When to Visit
For the Cruces de Mayo, May crosses are put up and decorated in the streets and squares of Fernán-Núñez on 2 and 3 May. The Feria Real in honour of the Virgen del Tránsito is held during the period from the 13th to the 17th. It includes, among other things, a procession with giant figures and oversized papier-mâché heads. The Feria and the festival days in honour of Santa Marina de las Aguas Santas, from the 18th to the 20th, feature various rides and other attractions. The exact dates of the two ferias may vary depending on the programme.
You can weigh up whether the festivals or the historic buildings should be the main focus of your stay. These occasions offer different ways to experience the town: the May crosses transform its streets and squares, while the two ferias bring their own tributes and programme highlights. For a shorter exploratory trip, you can shape your stay around a specific cultural interest.
