Mojácar combines a historic centre with coastal landscapes ranging from equipped beaches to unspoilt coves. The town has a total of 17 km of beaches, including equipped and accessible beaches awarded the Blue Flag. When planning your trip, it is therefore worth deciding where to focus: would you like to make more room for local history and architecture, the coast, or both?

The Historic Centre and Its History

The houses in the historic centre are arranged in terraces and adapted to the terrain; the streets are winding and steep. An accessible route through the historic centre includes a lift. It connects the upper part of town with the municipal car parks below. The Iglesia de Santa María was probably built in 1560 on the site of an earlier Arab mosque. It served both as a place of worship and as a fortress. The Puerta de la Ciudad also tells of older access routes: it was the original entrance to Mojácar and was rebuilt in the 16th century over an earlier Arab gate in the town wall. One specific detail stands out at the Fuente de Mojácar: it has twelve spouts at the front and one at the side. In the past, it was central to the town’s social life, as well as to its agriculture and livestock farming.

The Torre Atalaya del Pirulico is designated a Bien de Interés Cultural and listed in the General Catalogue of Andalusian Historical Heritage. The Casa Museo La Canana showcases a house from Mojácar dating to the first half of the 20th century. It has more than 200 m² of exhibition space featuring authentic contemporary objects. The Museo de Mojácar is the municipal museographic collection on Calle Cuesta de la Fuente. The Centro de arte «Mirador del Castillo» is an art centre on Calle Cuesta del Castillo. The Indalo is also part of the town’s cultural identity: it is considered a protective symbol associated with Mojácar and continues to appear in local handicrafts and on house walls.

Archaeological Traces and Viewpoints

Mojácar La Vieja preserves visible archaeological remains from the Andalusi period, when early Islamic communities settled the hill. A large cistern stands at the summit, while terraced houses extend along the southern and south-eastern slopes. The settlement included a castle with two sections and a wall with fifteen towers. Together, the houses, cistern and fortifications represent different aspects of the settlement’s history.

For views of the landscape, the Mirador de la Plaza Nueva and the Faro de Mojácar offer different perspectives. From the Mirador de la Plaza Nueva, the view stretches across a valley bordered by the Sierra de Cabrera, Bédar and Almagrera mountain ranges to the Río Aguas near Mojácar La Vieja. The outdoor platform at the Faro de Mojácar offers views over a large part of the Levante Almeriense coastline.

Beaches and Coastal Landscapes

The coast also offers a choice of different experiences. Playa de Marina de la Torre lies beside the protected Río Aguas lagoon. At Cala del Sombrerico, volcanic rock meets sand. This specially protected cove permits naturism and has no visitor facilities. The differences between equipped beaches and unspoilt coves can help you plan the coastal part of your stay around your interests.

Markets, Fiestas and Other Activities

Mojácar’s Wednesday market offers, among other things, vegetables, fruit, fish and handicrafts. El Rastrillo is a traditional open-air market held on Sunday mornings, where you can find books, paintings, beadwork, antiques and second-hand goods. If you plan to visit a market, check the market days in advance. The Fiestas de Moros y Cristianos commemorate the peaceful handover of the towns of the comarca to the Catholic Monarchs, negotiated at the end of the 15th century. During the parades, Kábilas and Cuarteles make their way through town in colourful costumes; check the specific festival dates before your trip.

Golf is another activity to consider: Club Marina Golf Mojácar includes an 18-hole golf course and a golf school. If you plan to play golf, check the operator’s current offerings in advance.

When looking for a hotel in Mojácar, the range of different travel themes is a good place to start. First consider whether historic townscapes, museums, coastal scenery or a mix of these will shape your stay.
