Fiñana brings together a medieval Alcazaba, religious buildings with a range of architectural features, and hiking trails by the Arroyo del Ubeire. This lets you experience culture and nature side by side on one trip. In the town, buildings and traditions take centre stage; the trails open up distinct landscapes and have different starting points.

The Alcazaba and the old street layout

The Alcazaba of Fiñana was built before the 10th century. The remains of three towers and the surrounding walls have survived. The complex flourished in the 13th and 15th centuries; it was occupied by the Christians in 1489. The surviving parts give this historic site a tangible setting, without requiring a fully intact fortress.

The neighbourhood that grew out of the Alcazaba also bears traces of the town’s earlier history: its streets retain evidence of the former Muslim suburb. Walking through this area, you encounter not only individual buildings but also a street layout handed down from the past.

Religious buildings with distinct architectural features

The Ermita de Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno preserves an almost completely intact 13th-century mosque. The minaret and courtyard are missing; the prayer hall with its qibla and part of the decoration on the mihrab portal have survived. In 1984, the mosque was declared a Historic-Artistic Monument. Its architectural history can be traced here through specific features such as the prayer hall and mihrab portal.

The Iglesia de la Anunciación was built in 1570. Its interior is designed in the Mudéjar style, while its façade features Renaissance elements. The sacristy houses a museum with religious images and scores of Gregorian chants. Access arrangements for this museum may vary; check them before your visit.

Corpus Christi and CIMENA

The Corpus Christi festival is one of Fiñana’s most important festive rituals. During the procession, blankets are hung from balconies to decorate the streets and façades along the procession route. Residents also set up altars at the doors of their homes. These features make the local tradition about more than the procession alone: they also involve the decoration of streets and doorways.

The Centro de Interpretación del Medio Natural (CIMENA) in Fiñana offers self-guided visits as well as guided tours on request. The centre’s visitor facilities also include the Museo de la Recreación de los Reyes Católicos. CIMENA thus complements the historic buildings and traditions with another cultural stop.

Sendero 21 and access routes to the Sendero Sulayr

Fiñana is one of the municipalities in Almería province included in the Espacio Natural de Sierra Nevada. Sendero 21 follows the Arroyo del Ubeire through a gallery forest of willows, alders, walnut trees and a few chestnut trees. The trail leads to the Cascada del Goterón, where the Ubeire, Estepar and Rosal streams meet. The waterfall is hidden from view along the preceding section of the trail.

Sendero 21 starts at the Albergue de Ubeire, about 13 km from Fiñana. The trail also provides access, via traditional packhorse paths, to the watermills with overshot wheels on the Río Nacimiento. For this hike, the route and starting point are therefore just as important as the natural features along the way. Since conditions on the trail may vary by season, check local trail conditions before setting out.

There are two ways to access the Sendero Sulayr from Fiñana: by vehicle and on foot. The vehicle route leads to the trail section between Piedra Negra and El Toril. The walking route goes from the Albergue de Ubeire along the perimeter track to Loma del Rosal. The two options differ both in how you get there and in their stated destination, so plan according to which section you want to reach.
