Explore El Ejido from several perspectives: archaeological sites tell stories of early cultures and the Roman era, while Punta Entinas-Sabinar brings coastal landscapes and wetlands into focus. There are also trails, a castle with a historical exhibition, and activities related to agriculture and water sports. When planning your trip, it’s worth choosing among these different themes based on what interests you most.

Archaeology from prehistory to the Roman era

The Yacimiento Arqueológico de Ciavieja is listed as an archaeological zone and an asset of special cultural interest. Its chronology spans from the 5th century BC to the Roman era. It begins in the Chalcolithic period, has a strong Neolithic substrate associated with the so-called Culture of Almería, and extends into the Bronze Age with the Argaric culture. Evidence at the site shows that the Roman city of Murgi remained inhabited until the 4th century AD.

The Colección Arqueológica de El Ejido offers a different kind of overview: its two rooms are devoted to prehistory and the Roman era. The period represented begins with the earliest known settlement, more than 5,000 years ago, and extends to the end of the Roman era. On display is a Roman mosaic that was accidentally discovered in 1984 at the archaeological site of Murgi. Ciavieja and the collection therefore focus on different aspects: the long sequence of history at an archaeological site, and its thematic presentation across two rooms.

El Daymún also combines protected historic status with a specific archaeological find. The mausoleum dates from the 3rd to 4th centuries AD and contains 19 tombs, discovered in 1987. Recognized as an asset of special cultural interest in the category of Monument, it is considered one of the finest examples of Roman funerary architecture at the provincial level.

Coastal landscapes and nature in the Punta Entinas-Sabinar area

Punta Entinas-Sabinar stretches along 15 kilometres of coastline, with dunes, salt flats, beaches and wetlands. The wetlands provide habitat for migratory birds such as flamingos; the area also includes one of the best-preserved dune ecosystems on the Iberian Peninsula. Playa Cerrillos de El Ejido is a secluded, undeveloped beach within the protected area. There are also seagrass meadows of the Posidonia genus.

The Centro de Interpretación de Punta Entinas-Sabinar presents the area’s ecosystems, flora and fauna, as well as its cultural heritage and Posidonia oceanica seagrass meadows. It is located in Almerimar at the corner of Calle Aguamarina and Avenida del Mar. Visitors interested in the landscape and its habitats can find a thematic introduction here; the coast and its dunes can also be explored as a separate focus of the trip.

The “Marismas de Punta Entinas” trail runs along the northern edge of the area and can be accessed from Almerimar. For a longer hiking option, La Ruta del Agua passes through the peri-urban area of El Ejido. It is 11.5 kilometres long, well signposted, rated as easy, and takes approximately four hours. Along the route, remains from different periods, including cisterns and aqueducts, illustrate the local history of water management. The estimated duration provides a useful point of comparison when planning; check current trail conditions before setting out.

Fortifications, exhibitions and activities

The Castillo de Guardias Viejas was built in the 18th century and partially rebuilt in 1817 after being partly destroyed during the Spanish War of Independence. Its terrace offers views of the coast, and inside there is a permanent exhibition of historical uniforms and weapons. The Torre Fortificada de Balerma stands on the seafront promenade. It was built in the mid-18th century to defend the coast of the former Kingdom of Granada. The two structures offer insight into different aspects of military history; the castle terrace adds a coastal view to a visit focused on history.

For other activities, there are options in Almerimar: Clisol Turismo Agrícola offers an interactive tour of protected agriculture in El Ejido for all age groups. Club Náutico Almerimar offers sailing courses for all age groups and diving courses for different skill levels. Club de Golf Almerimar has a 27-hole course, as well as a golf school and practice facilities. Course and facility offerings may change, so check the latest information before making plans.
