Cóbdar can be explored through its distinctive landscape and local history: the Río Los Molinos runs through the town, while the striking hill of La Piedra, with its bright white marble, rises above it. The town also has an old quarter with Arab-influenced streets, traces of a Neolithic settlement and a path through shady woodland. Depending on your interests, you can focus your stay more on cultural history or on the landscape.
Landscape and Orientation
Cóbdar lies in the Sierra de los Filabres and is surrounded by pine trees. La Piedra defines the town’s setting: Cóbdar lies below the striking hill of La Piedra, distinguished by its bright white marble. The Río Los Molinos runs through the town and provides a second landmark in the landscape. The bell tower of the Iglesia de Santa María is visible from various points in Cóbdar and stands out as a prominent landmark in the townscape.
Old Quarter and Architectural History
Las Morerías is Cóbdar’s old quarter. Winding corners, small Arab-influenced streets and whitewashed houses built in the traditional style define this part of town. Las Morerías thus brings together street layout and architectural style, rather than confining its history to a single building. The Terna de Cóbdar offers a different perspective: it is an example of architecture owned by the nobility and used for public purposes. The Lavadero Público de Cóbdar is part of the ethnological heritage and recalls times gone by. La Herrería, an old ironworks whose origins probably date to the late 17th or early 18th century, also stands on the banks of the Río Los Molinos. Here, its riverside location meets its former craft and industrial function.
Archaeological Traces
The Cueva del Castillico also points to an earlier period: evidence of a Neolithic settlement was found in the cave. Finds include polished stone axes, ornaments, pottery and marble bands. The artefacts are on display at the Museo Arqueológico de Almería. The cave finds add a prehistoric layer to the streets and buildings of Cóbdar’s history.
Exploring the Río Los Molinos
If you would like to focus on the landscape and outdoor activities, you can include the SL-A 016 Camino del río Los Molinos route. It is accessible on foot, by bicycle and on horseback. The route passes through cool, shady woodland towards the Molino de la Palmera, which is considered one of the largest mills. The woodland path and its destination, the Molino de la Palmera, give it a different focus from the town’s historic streets, buildings and archaeological finds. Choose whether to devote your time mainly to the townscape and its history or to include a scenic route in your trip to Cóbdar.
