Serón offers a range of ways to explore: a disused railway line turned into a trail, historic buildings, the mining settlement of Las Menas, and activities related to astronomy and local food culture. You can choose your focus based on whether you prefer to be out and about, explore architectural history, or plan around an event date.
Trail profiles between the railway line and a viewpoint
The Vía Verde del Hierro follows a disused railway line dating from 1894 through the municipality of Serón. It is now a non-motorized trail for walking or cycling. At 11.8 kilometers long, with only gentle gradients, it offers a clearly defined route that you can fit around your plans for the day.
The Sendero Local Las Menas is a circular route through the mining settlement, passing the area's most distinctive sites. The Sendero panorámico de Serón offers a different focus: it leads to the Balsa de la Alconaiza and continues to a viewpoint in the Alconaiza area. The viewpoint was established on a former threshing floor and has an information panel. The routes therefore differ in both form and destination: a circular route through Las Menas or a route to a named viewpoint.
Castle, churches and townscape
Castillo de Serón was built in the 13th century in the province of Almería and served a defensive function during the Nasrid period. Today, the castle offers panoramic views of the Almanzora Valley and the Sierra de las Estancias. Here, historical significance and expansive landscape views come together.
The Iglesia de la Anunciación dates from the 17th century and was declared a national historic-artistic monument in 1983. Its central nave has a Lima-Bordón ceiling structure decorated with eight-pointed stars and square interlacing motifs. The Ermita de los Remedios offers a different architectural style: it is a 19th-century Neoclassical building with a rectangular floor plan and a single nave. Its main chapel houses the image of the Virgen de los Remedios.
The Calle Real can also help you get your bearings in the historic center: as the main street, it encircles the historic core. The named buildings and the street offer different ways to explore the town's history and character, without requiring a set sightseeing itinerary.
Mining heritage and landscape
Las Menas is a mining settlement with buildings of considerable architectural quality. These include the Ermita de Santa Bárbara, a hospital, offices, a workers' pavilion, workshops, and several houses for managers and technicians. The variety of buildings encompasses religious, administrative, occupational and residential functions, making mining heritage a distinct topic alongside the buildings in the historic center.
The viewpoints and natural features also differ in how they relate to their surroundings. The viewpoint at the Ermita Virgen de la Cabeza offers a view across the Vega of Serón, which occupies the river deposits of the Almanzora Valley. El Aljibe is a natural hot-water spring near the settlement of Fuencaliente. These places therefore represent different aspects of the landscape: a view across the Vega and a spring near a settlement.
Astronomy and regional food culture
The Planetario de Serón offers live educational events on astronomy, geosciences, the history of astronomy and cultural astronomy. There are also observations of the night sky using telescopes and binoculars. These may include constellations, planets, deep-sky objects and, when visible, the Moon. The events and observations give a trip a different focus from architectural and mining history.
The Feria del Jamón has been held on the first weekend of July since 1995. The program includes a national ham-carving competition and public tastings of freshly sliced products. If you would like to plan your trip around the Feria, check the specific event dates in advance. Jamón de Serón has a protected geographical indication. The history of the meat products industry in Serón, which has developed since the 18th century, is a separate matter.
