Boeun can be explored through different historical periods and specific sites: its themes range from tombs dating to the Three Kingdoms of Korea to the Joseon period and the Donghak Peasant Revolution. There is also the Boeun Traditional Market and two trail sections along the Boecheon Stream, each with seasonal or evening features. Together, they offer several ways to understand Boeun as a travel destination.

History and Education

Established in 2017, the Historic Trail with Silla People connects the Agricultural Exhibition Hall, Samnyeonsanseong Fortress, and the ancient tombs. The exhibition hall includes an exhibit on regional agricultural culture and a blacksmith workshop. The trail thus leads from agriculture and crafts to historic sites. Samnyeonsanseong Fortress is designated Historic Site No. 235.

The Boeun Daeya-ri Ancient Tombs date to the Three Kingdoms period of Korea and are located in Daeya-ri, Boeun-eup. The group comprises around 310 or more tombs in Daeya-ri and in the area bordering Daeya-ri and Pyeonggak-ri. Alongside the fortress, this tomb group offers its own historical perspective.

Another perspective is offered by Boeunhyanggyo in Gyosa-ri, Boeun. This Confucian school and shrine was founded during the Joseon period (1392–1910) to teach local followers of Confucianism and hold seasonal ceremonies in honor of prominent Confucian thinkers. Teaching and ceremonies are therefore also part of the area's history.

Commemorating the Donghak Peasant Revolution

The Donghak Peasant Revolution Memorial Park is located in Seongjok-ri, at one of the final battlefields of the Donghak Peasant Revolution. As an eco-friendly ecological area, it allows visitors to experience the revolution's ideology and historical significance. The named battlefield and ecological focus provide a different emphasis from Boeunhyanggyo's traditions of teaching and ceremonies.

Market Days and Trails along the Boecheon Stream

The Boeun Traditional Market in Boeun-eup opened in 1981 and operates on an ongoing, regular basis. Market days are the 1st and 6th of each month. If you want to plan your visit around a market day, check the dates in advance; the market calendar may be subject to local changes.

A 300-meter section of the Boecheon Stream walking trail in Ipyung-ri features an eco-tunnel planted with trumpet flowers. In summer, it provides shade and a place to rest. The 3.5-kilometer cherry blossom section of the Boecheon cycling trail has different features: it is equipped with tree and street lighting, and visitors can cycle or walk there after sunset.

The two trail sections differ in both length and their described uses: for the riverside trail tunnel, summer, shade, and a place to rest are important; the longer cherry blossom section is about lighting and activities after sunset. This gives you a practical basis for choosing between a summer visit to the trail and evening cycling or walking.

Boeun as a Place to Stay

If you are looking for a hotel in Boeun, you can choose your destination based on whether history, market days, or the trail sections along the Boecheon Stream are the deciding factor for your stay. This gives you several local themes to choose from without setting a fixed order for your visit.
