Chungcheongbuk-Do is an inland region in the center of the Korean Peninsula. Its attractions offer a range of experiences: Buddhist heritage, rocky peaks by the river, trails and viewpoints, and regional food culture. When planning your trip, you can choose which theme you would like to explore further.
Buddhist Heritage and Cultural Heritage Sites
Beopjusa in Songnisan-myeon, Boeun-gun, is one of the seven Buddhist mountain monasteries of the Sansa UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed in 2018. Boeun-gun is also home to Songnisan Theme Park, a nature-oriented tourism complex designed for overnight stays. Its forest recreation facilities include zip lines and monorails. A Buddhist mountain monastery and a complex focused on forest recreation thus offer two distinctly different themes to explore.
The Cheongpung Cultural Heritage Complex in Jecheon-si brings together various cultural heritage sites and artifacts. These include Hanbyeongnu Pavilion and the standing stone Buddha, both designated as Treasures, as well as Paryeongnu and Geumnamnu Pavilions, Geumbyeongheon Hall, Eungcheonggak Pavilion, and the local Confucian school, Cheongpunghyanggyo. There are also almost 2,000 household artifacts. The collection therefore ranges from pavilions and a hall to a Confucian school and household items.
River Landscapes and Trails in Danyang
The three Dodamsambong Peaks rise in the middle of the Namhangang River, with Sobaeksan Mountain framing them in the distance. The hexagonal Samdojeong Pavilion stands on the central peak. Rocks, river and pavilion combine to shape the landscape here. The Mancheonha Skywalk in Jeokseong-myeon, Danyang-gun offers another perspective on the Namhangang River: it stands 80 to 90 meters above the water. The 1.2-kilometer Danyanggang Jando Trail also runs along the Namhangang River.
These details describe different ways to experience the river landscape: the length of the walking route is given for the Danyanggang Jando Trail, while the Mancheonha Skywalk’s height above the water is specified. From the Yangbangsan Paragliding Site in Danyang-gun, panoramic views stretch over Danyang and the winding Namhangang River. Tourists and extreme sports enthusiasts use the site for hang gliding and paragliding. Danyang Paravillage also offers paragliding; its takeoff and landing zones are operated exclusively by the company. Conditions may vary with the weather.
Views and Seasonal Landscapes
At Mungwang Reservoir in Goesan-gun, rows of tall ginkgo trees at the entrance and around the water form a golden canopy that is especially striking in autumn. Those interested in a view from above can find a different kind of panorama on the Cheongpung Cable Car: it travels 2.7 kilometers from Multaeri Station to the summit of Bibongsan Mountain and back. From the summit, at 531 meters above sea level, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Cheongpungho Lake. The golden canopy by the water and the panoramic view from the mountain offer contrasting landscape highlights.
Regional Specialties and Wine
Culinary offerings also vary from place to place. Joeunga in Boeun-eup, Boeun-gun, specializes in jujube desserts made with the company’s distinctive jujube paste. As the producer’s availability and products may change, it is best to check whether the offerings are available before visiting. Chungju-si is known for traditional Korean confectionery made with apples. Yeongdong is considered Korea’s largest grape producer.
The Yeongdong Wine Tunnel in Yeongdong-eup is 420 meters long and is located within the Rainbow Healing Tourist Site. Its features include the Wine Culture Hall, which covers the history of wine; the Yeongdong Wine Hall, with wine produced in Yeongdong; and a military magazine dating from the Japanese occupation. The tunnel thus encompasses wine and cultural themes as well as a historical element. Together with the jujube desserts in Boeun and apple confectionery in Chungju, it offers a varied look at regional specialties, without suggesting that any one product represents the whole region.
