Bell culture, memorial sites and nature ecology offer distinct themes to consider when planning a trip. The Jincheon Bell Museum brings together research, collection and preservation of Korean bells; the memorial hall, historic gate and stele each offer their own focus. At Manroesan Natural Ecological Park, the emphasis is on nature and learning areas. Deciding which of these themes you would like to explore further is a useful starting point for planning your stay.

Korean Bells: Research and Passing on Traditions

The Jincheon Bell Museum opened in September 2005. Its work includes researching, collecting, exhibiting and preserving Korean bells. The museum also aims to convey their artistic value and quality, which are described as internationally recognized. Its subject therefore extends beyond individual bells to include their study, preservation and cultural significance.

In June 2012, the museum established a training center for Jucheoljang. It helps pass on the traditional casting technique designated as National Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 112 and teaches the making of Korean bells. The museum and center thus represent two related but distinct perspectives: one focuses on research, collection and preservation, while the other passes on a specific casting technique. If you are particularly interested in the craft of making bells, this distinction offers another way to explore bell culture.

Memorial Sites and Historic Architecture

The Lee Sang-seol Memorial Hall was built to honor the achievements and patriotism of Bojae Lee Sang-seol. It offers a different focus from the bell museum: here, the emphasis is on honoring an individual, while the museum explores Korean bell culture.

The Jincheon Local Folk Materials Exhibition Hall also offers a point of reference in its architecture: it is a concrete building with a tiled roof, one basement level and two above-ground floors. Its total floor area is 521.1 m². Its form and dimensions give a specific impression of the building, while the Lee Sang-seol Memorial Hall can be understood through the purpose for which it was dedicated.

At Pung-hwaru, the architectural form and history go hand in hand: the outer three-part gate of Jincheon Hyanggyo was built in 1804 at his own expense by local dignitary Choi Heup. The Jincheon Yeongok-ri Stele offers a different point of interest. It is made of stone, has no inscription and is known as a Baekbi (“white stele”). These two historic landmarks thus differ in both their form and their recorded characteristics.

Nature and Practical Information

Manroesan Natural Ecological Park is located in the Yeongok-ri area of Jincheon-eup and is an experiential nature ecology park. Its facilities include an ecological pond, an arboretum of native woody plants, a nectar plant garden, a wetland garden, an orchard, a wildflower and herb garden, an ecological education center, an insect observation area and a forest learning area. These areas bring together plants, wetlands, insect observation and learning in the forest. If you are visiting for a particular facility, please check in advance whether it is currently open for use.

Saenggeo Jincheon Traditional Market is easily accessible by bus and taxi and has extensive parking on underground and above-ground levels. If you are relying on a specific connection or parking arrangements, check local traffic and parking conditions before setting out.
