On the southwestern edge of the Ljubljana Marshes, near the springs of the Ljubljanica, Vrhnika brings together marshland, karst springs and traces of different eras. MoÄŤilnik makes a striking introduction: the spring valley is lined by cliffs up to 40 metres high, also known as HudiÄŤeve skale.

Water, Marsh and Rock

Near Bevke lies Mali plac, a raised bog covering just under two hectares and a designated nature reserve. Lintvern also shows how changeable the water landscape can be: the karst swallow hole beneath Jelovec is the source of the Bela stream. It releases water at irregular intervals and can become partly or completely dry between outflows. In the Bela valley, Star maln preserves a mill wheel and a weir from the former mill.

The Kucler quarry reveals a different kind of natural history. It was declared a natural monument of geological significance in 1991 and is known for fossil shells and other microfossils. A geological column displays the rocks found across the wider area. Around Vrhnika, visible landscape features thus sit alongside evidence of the geological past.

From Nauportus to the Roman Defensive Wall

The history reaches far back: by the middle of the 2nd century BC at the latest, a settlement existed in the wider Vrhnika area, known in Latinised form as Nauportus. It was a station on the ancient trade route from Aquileia to Segestika. In the 1st century BC, a Roman part of the settlement developed in its immediate vicinity. This sequence makes Nauportus a landmark in the early history of the area.

Remains of the Roman defensive wall Claustra Alpium Iuliarum are also still visible in the Vrhnika area. Between Verd and Zaplana, it was over 10 kilometres long, about one metre wide and two to three metres high. These measurements offer a concrete sense of the structure, while the surviving remains place this chapter of history in the landscape.

Places of Art and Remembrance

The Lovrenčič House, also known as the Old Post Office, stands on the bank of the Ljubljanica. It is located on the site of a harbour that existed until 1790. A mercury storehouse from the period of shipping on the Ljubljanica also survives there. In Verd, Mik’lčeva kašča displays photographs of works by Jožef Petkovšek in a permanent exhibition, alongside changing art exhibitions.

The Cankar House is a cultural monument in the town centre, on the site of the wooden house where Ivan Cankar was born. The exhibition includes historic interiors and a collection depicting the living conditions of a family on the brink of poverty in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It also features first editions of Cankar’s works, photographs, self-portraits and drawings; guided tours are available. Check current access arrangements for exhibitions and tours before your visit.

Časovna postaja Vrhnika adds to these insights with a virtual reality journey through several eras, from the first traces of human presence in prehistoric times to the construction of the first section of motorway in Slovenia. The site also includes an authentically furnished stationmaster’s office with museum objects and a real steam locomotive.

Above Vrhnika stands the Church of the Holy Trinity, built around 1640. Its frescoes are by Ogrin and Koželj; in the 18th century, the church was a popular pilgrimage destination. Its building history, furnishings and former role as a place of pilgrimage offer different ways to explore the region’s cultural history.

Trails with Different Themes

The Marsh Gnomes Trail is an easy 3.2-kilometre walk with 96 metres of elevation gain, running from Bevke Sports Park via Kostanjevica to Mali plac Nature Reserve and back. The estimated walking time is about two hours. For those looking for a biographical trail rather than a landscape walk, Po poti Cankarjeve mladosti is a themed route with 17 stops that tells the story of Ivan Cankar’s life.

The 27-kilometre circular cycling route through the Ljubljana Marshes offers a different scale. It starts and ends in front of TIC Vrhnika. The walk around Mali plac and the cycling route therefore differ clearly in length and mode of transport; choose the one that suits your preferred type of tour. Conditions on the walking trail can vary by season. Check local conditions before setting out on the cycling route.
