A permanent exhibition at the Slamnikarski muzej Domžale tells the story of 300 years of straw hat weaving in the Domžale area. Typical Domžale straw hats, tools and production methods bring the work to life; stories about the weaving add context to the finished hats. The visit thus leads from the shaped product back to the techniques and stories associated with it. The museum offers school groups themed tours with hands-on creative workshops. Check their availability in advance.
Hiking Trails, a Cycling Route and Climbing Crags
The Domžalska pot spominov is a mountain hiking trail and is among the long-distance trails recognised under the Mountain Trails Act. It is more than 100 kilometres long and runs at elevations between 300 and 957 metres; its route includes Špilk above Blagovica. The first checkpoint is in Domžale, at a monument beside the footbridge over the Kamniška Bistrica. Check route conditions before setting out.
The well-marked Pravljični Šumberk route is 3.54 kilometres long; it takes a family around three hours, although the actual duration may vary. The almost eight-kilometre-long Domžalska čebelarska učna pot introduces visitors to beekeeping and its history. The first route focuses on distance and an approximate time frame, while the second focuses on bees and covers a longer distance.
The Slamnata kitka cycling route starts and ends in Domžale and follows side roads through extensive fields along the Kamniška Bistrica. The focus at the MTB poligon Šumberk is different: marked trails of varying difficulty are intended for recreational cyclists and mountain bikers training.
Knezove skale offers views of the Kamniška Bistrica and the Kamnik–Savinja Alps. This outdoor climbing area has 23 established routes, graded from 3 to 7b. As conditions and route equipment may change, check both before climbing.
Crafts, a Cave and Architecture
Železna jama consists of two chambers connected by a passage and bridges. Its curved stalactites are particularly distinctive: wind influenced their shape as they formed. The Jamarski muzej can be visited at Jamarski dom, with permanent exhibitions. These include a speleological collection of stalactites from the collection of naturalist Franc Hohenwart, dating from the early 18th century.
Grad Krumperk is a Renaissance castle with a square floor plan, distinctive corner towers and a rare surviving corbel-supported cornice. A Baroque garden pavilion has been restored in the former castle park of Dvorec Češenik. The Church of Marije Vnebovzete na Goričici stands at a site with a church history dating back to the Middle Ages.
Mestni kino Domžale focuses its film programme mainly on art-house and auteur films, and also offers high-quality content for children and young people. Poletno gledališče Studenec offers a different cultural highlight: it is Slovenia’s third-largest covered open-air theatre. The first local theatre performance there took place in 1949.
Horses and Riverside Trails
At Konjeniški center Brdo pri Ihanu, visitors can meet horses and enjoy recreational riding; visits are arranged by appointment. Riding lessons are available for younger and older participants, from beginners to advanced riders.
Pot ob Kamniški Bistrici adds rest areas with drinking fountains, children’s playgrounds and outdoor fitness equipment to the network of trails. If you are planning to use any of these facilities, check their current condition in advance, as individual facilities may change.
