Vrhnika offers different ways to explore literary heritage, Roman history and the landscape. The Cankar Memorial House commemorates the writer Ivan Cankar; in Močilnik, springs and rock faces shape the scenery of the spring valley. There are also remains of Roman fortifications and trails leading up to the wooded Planina. You can focus your stay on cultural history, nature or both.
Cankar, Nauportus and Roman Traces
The Cankar Memorial House is in the house where Ivan Cankar was born in 1876, and is designated a cultural monument. Furniture and other household items from the late 19th century have been preserved, illustrating the everyday life of the Cankar family. Alongside Cankar’s birthplace, visitors can also get a glimpse of family life at the time.
Roman history can be seen at several named sites. The remains of a Roman watchtower, which was part of the Claustra Alpium Iuliarum fortification system, are preserved in Turnovše. Next to the cemetery in Vrhnika, part of the corner tower of a pentagonal Roman fortification has been preserved. The guided city tour “A Walk Through History” presents Roman Vrhnika as Nauportus and includes visible remains of the Roman defensive wall of Claustra Alpium Iuliarum. It takes visitors through the centre, lasts about two hours and is available on request.
The “Time Station Vrhnika” also explores the history of transport in the Vrhnika area. The exhibition is housed in the renovated Vrhnika–Trg railway station, later the town’s local train station. It features an interactive quiz and a virtual train journey through various historical time stations. The “Ljubljanica River Exhibition” in Vrhnika has ceased its activities.
The Spring Landscape of Močilnik
Močilnik is a spring valley where the Veliki Močilnik and Mali Močilnik springs flow into the Mala Ljubljanica. Veliki Močilnik emerges beneath 40-metre-high rock faces, also known as Hudičeve skale. The rock imprint “Jazonova pest” is embedded above the bridge by the spring. The names, rock faces and springs give this place a character distinct from the historic sites in the centre.
Hiking Trails and Views on Planina
The wooded Planina above Vrhnika is 733 metres high. At the summit there is a mountain hut and a 22-metre-high observation tower. Planina is also a junction for several hiking trails, including the E6 European long-distance path. For the ascent, “Pot čez Špico” is the steeper, shorter route; “Pot mimo Bukve” is the gentler, slightly longer descent. Trail conditions may vary seasonally.
The mountain hut at the summit serves štruklji filled with plums, a Vrhnika speciality. Availability may vary. This lets you combine an outing in the landscape with a local dish, without needing to fit the route and the hut visit into the same time slot.
More Trails and Ways to Get Around in Vrhnika
The “Tempelj zmaja Lintverna” experience starts in Vrhnika and follows a circular route through a landscape of streams, pools, small waterfalls and wild forest. The route is listed as 4.5 kilometres each way; the final kilometre is a mountain hiking trail. Conditions on this trail may vary.
The “Pot Cankarjeve mladosti” trail ends in Močilnik, by the springs of the Ljubljanica. A three-hour guided option also includes a visit to the Cankar Memorial House. For shorter trips within Vrhnika, visitors can also use Biciklanc, a bike-sharing system for anyone who wants to get around more easily by bicycle.
Which Focus Suits Your Stay?
The guided options differ in how much time to allow: “A Walk Through History” is a city tour lasting about two hours and available on request; the guided option for “Pot Cankarjeve mladosti” lasts three hours and includes the Cankar Memorial House. These are different formats—a tour through the centre and a trail option that includes a visit to the memorial house. When looking for accommodation in Vrhnika, you can first consider whether you want to focus your stay mainly on cultural history, trails in the landscape or both.
