In the northern part of the municipality of Tržič, the Central Karawanks rise above the landscape. The municipality brings together a range of themes to explore: a protected old town, handicrafts, museums and natural monuments. This contrast is especially vivid where tangible traces of history stand alongside geological features.

Old Town, Handicrafts and Architectural History

The old town of Tržič is fully protected as a cultural monument. Germovka Forge, the best-preserved forge in Tržič, is a striking example of local craftsmanship. The Kurnik House, in turn, combines rural and small-town architecture from the 18th and 19th centuries and the first half of the 20th century. Its architectural history can therefore be viewed across several periods, without reducing the house to a single era.

At the Tržiški muzej, the local shoemaking craft, leather production, traditional Tržiški-Vişnje stockings, blue-dyed fabric production and the skiing tradition are among the exhibition topics. The Slovenian Ski Museum traces the development of skiing, from its early beginnings as a means of transport to the modern sport. Together, the two museums offer different perspectives on local crafts and the history of skiing.

The Museum of the Ljubelj Concentration Camp offers another historical perspective. Its permanent exhibition is housed in a former military barracks. The Dr. Tone Pretnar Memorial Room is dedicated to the translator’s work: his demanding translations introduced Slovenian readers to numerous foreign authors.

Rocks, Fossils and Natural Values

Dovžanova soteska is protected as a natural monument and is home to a unique fossil site from the Late Paleozoic. A scenic educational trail leads through the gorge; information boards share insights about its rocks and fossils. If you plan to follow the trail, check the local access conditions before your visit. This lets you combine the gorge’s geological highlights with the information along the way.

Stegovniški Waterfall is another specific point of interest for exploring nature: it is about 15 metres high and can also be reached by mountain bike. Route conditions can vary, so check the latest conditions in advance. In the centre of Žiganja vas stands a village linden tree that is more than 500 years old and is considered a natural asset of national importance.

Trails, Special Experiences and Traditions

The Municipality of Tržič is responsible for maintaining the themed Rožnovenska pot trail. Check the trail’s condition before your visit. Another offering turns its focus to the night: MYCONOCTIS offers a nocturnal excursion along a mysterious mushroom trail in the heart of the Karawanks. Confirm that this experience is available before your visit.

Šuštarska nedelja grew out of Tržič’s markets and takes place on the first Sunday in September. Check the specific event dates for the year you plan to travel. A seasonal cultural attraction is the Tekec Nativity scene, an example of Slovenian folk and religious culture; check its availability in advance. A visit to Neuhaus Castle includes a herb garden and a tea gathering. Check the availability of this experience before your visit as well.

Getting There by Car
