St. Elizabeth’s Church takes you far back into the history of Slovenj Gradec: it is the town’s oldest building and was built shortly after 1235. Its fine Baroque furnishings are among the outstanding achievements of Baroque sculpture in Slovenia. The old town centre also tells a story of continuity: it has retained its original layout and is now considered an important urban monument.

You can stroll along the remains of Slovenia’s highest surviving medieval town wall. The restored Rotenturn manor house was created from the former Schulthauzinger Tower. Together with St. Elizabeth’s Church and the preserved layout of the town centre, it offers various ways to explore the town’s history—from medieval buildings to a manor house remodelled at a later date.
The Koroška Gallery of Fine Arts, or KGLU for short, is a museum of modern and contemporary art. Its focus is on visual art from the second half of the 20th century onwards, and its collection comprises around 3,000 works. Hugo Wolf adds a different cultural note: he spent his childhood in Slovenj Gradec, and a permanent commemorative exhibition about the composer is on display in his birthplace.
Cycling routes by length and difficulty
For a direct comparison, consider three circular routes starting and ending in Slovenj Gradec. At 19.2 kilometres, Suhi Dol is the easiest of the three. The moderately difficult Pavja Tura is 22.5 kilometres long. The more challenging Ĺ isernikova Pot is 33 kilometres long and is intended for experienced cyclists who are in good physical condition. The routes therefore differ not only in length but also in their stated difficulty.
The Ĺ trekna offers a different kind of cycling: its entire 35-kilometre route is paved, consistently signposted and separated from motor traffic. Its steady, gentle descent makes it particularly suitable for families and older cyclists. Conditions on the cycling routes mentioned may vary seasonally; check them before setting out.
Trails through nature and history
The walking routes also differ in theme and length. The 28.7-kilometre Šmarška parish trail connects several churches in the area around Slovenj Gradec. The 7-kilometre Crafts Trail has cultural, historical and ethnological significance; it passes through Šmartno, Golavabuka and Legen. Meškova pot runs for 14 kilometres through Sele and Vrhe.
For those interested in the landscape, the Plešivec Trail offers a distinctive natural setting: this 10-kilometre hiking trail in the Slovenj Gradec area follows the edge of Mount Uršlja gora through gorges, forests and meadows. Shorter routes start from different points and offer a different scale: the 4-kilometre walking trail to Rahtelov vrh is near Slovenj Gradec, while the 2.3-kilometre Tičnica Forest Nature Trail starts in Rožnik Park. The Trail to the Land of Dwarfs is 6 kilometres long and is located in Gmajna. The Green Trail with a Story is a circular educational trail starting in Podgorje and is around 9.3 kilometres long. The Roman Trail is an 11-kilometre route in the Slovenj Gradec area. If you’d like to combine different activities, the Berneker Trail offers options for hiking, cycling and horse riding.
Water, crafts and local traditions
