Mislinja can be explored through a variety of details: Štrekna follows a disused railway line, while the blacksmith’s workshop, church and park each preserve their own chapters of the town’s history. There are also arts offerings, a cave with a history of visitor access, and a ski jumping centre. When planning your trip, it helps to distinguish between these themes: the cycling route combines exercise with railway heritage, while the cultural sites focus on architectural and craft history. Events and sports add their own distinct elements to the picture.

Štrekna: a cycling route along a former railway line

Štrekna is a paved cycling route that follows the disused line of a former railway. Its separate cycling path is particularly suitable for children and older people. There are several rest stops and former railway tunnels along the route, so the former use of the line remains visible in its built features.

The section of Štrekna in Mislinja is considered the most varied part of the route. It includes the route’s highest point, where the highest railway station in the former Yugoslavia once stood. The station is part of the history of the former railway, while Štrekna is now described as a cycling route. This lets visitors distinguish between two periods without confusing the railway’s history with its current use.

Architectural history, art and crafts

The Tisnikar House is a 17th-century building that was originally an ironworks. Today, it houses the Kavka Gallery and an information centre. Art courses and exhibitions are held in the house; the cultural programme also includes the international Tisnikarjeva likovna kolonija, Grabn Art and the Mala Tisnikarjeva kolonija. Individual programmes may vary. If you are planning a visit, check the latest visitor information and opening hours in advance.

The fully preserved Robnikova kovačija offers a different insight into the history of crafts. Among the many tools preserved there is a water-powered hammer. The smithy and the Tisnikar House thus represent different facets of local history: the former is a preserved workshop with its original equipment, while the latter is a former ironworks that now also houses art and information facilities.

The Church of St. Ahac was built in the second half of the 15th century, around 1470, and is considered a well-preserved example of Gothic architecture. The nave has a wooden ceiling dating from around 1730. The two dates refer to different periods: the church is considerably older than the ceiling, which helps define the interior.

Zois Park and Huda Luknja

Zois Park is largely preserved. Its notable features include trees around 250 years old, among the thickest in Slovenia. Their age and size give the park a distinct character alongside the historic buildings and former iron industry.

Huda Luknja is one of the larger natural attractions in the Koroška–Šalek region. The cave was opened to visitors in 1895. This historical opening date does not indicate current visiting hours, so check the latest access information before planning a visit.

Sport and local traditions

Another sporting attraction is the Mislinja Ski Jumping Centre. Its facilities include the plastic-covered HS-93M, HS-72M, HS-35M and HS-15M jumps, as well as a chairlift and lighting. If the centre is relevant to your trip, check its operating availability in advance.

The charcoal-burning tradition in Mislinja is celebrated during the municipal holiday in the last week of June; the programme may vary from year to year. At the Pozdrav jeseni event, the largest local produce is selected and weighed. Bread and other delicacies are also exhibited. While the charcoal-burning tradition is tied to the last week of June, Pozdrav jeseni has a culinary focus. You can factor the timing and distinct themes of these events separately into your travel plans.
