The Sitarjevec Mine offers an unusual perspective on Litija: the mine’s access tunnel features remarkable limonite formations, including stalagmites, stalactites, stalactite curtains and spaghetti-like stalactite formations. The variety of shapes makes the mine’s mineral character a highlight of the visit. The tunnel is step-free and suitable for visitors with reduced mobility. Check the booking conditions before your trip. At visitors’ request, the miners’ meal “Sitarjevška malca” can be served; it is best to confirm availability when booking.
Hiking trails with different focuses
The Oglarska pot is a marked circular themed trail about 14 kilometres long. It passes charcoal burners’ homesteads as well as natural and cultural attractions. The Levstik Trail has a different focus: it starts in Litija’s old town and makes the complete original travel diary of Slovenian writer Fran Levstik (1831–1887) accessible on more than 80 information boards. So, on these trails, you can encounter charcoal burners’ homesteads and attractions on the one hand, and a literary travel account on the other.
The Badjurova pot and the Svibno Forest Learning Trail also appeal to different interests. The Badjurova pot is registered with the Planinska zveza Slovenije as a circular mountain hike and is considered easy and suitable for all hikers; check route warnings before setting out. The Svibno Forest Learning Trail has its own focus: its 13 learning stations cover forests, animals, plants and the development of trees. If you would like to experience the Levstik Trail during its annual mass hike, mark the second Saturday in November on your calendar. The international hike runs from Litija to Čatež and is accompanied by an extensive cultural programme. Check the date for the relevant year when planning your visit.
Museum, Vače and charcoal
Two permanent exhibitions are on display at the Litija City Museum: “Southern Railway” and the history of navigation on the Sava. The museum also has the “Exploring Litija” tourism exhibition space. Check the exhibition information before your visit. The two exhibitions offer different thematic perspectives, while the exhibition space focuses on Litija.
Near Vače, at Klenik, stands an enlarged replica of the Vače situla. Wooden statues along the Avenue of Creativity, near the replica, offer insights into Slovenian culture and ways of life. The Vače Archaeological Trail, in turn, introduces the culture and way of life of Iron Age Vače. You can explore the area through a replica of the situla, cultural interpretations and an archaeological trail.
At Charcoal Land in Dole pri Litiji, visitors can watch the traditional construction of charcoal kilns and the carbonisation of wood. It is also possible to take an active part in wood- and fire-related activities connected with charcoal production. There is also special cuisine for visitors to try; individual offerings may vary. Charcoal Land offers a distinctive way to discover charcoal production: you can observe the work processes and take part yourself.
More experiences and the landscape
At the GEOSS Adventure Park, you can choose from seven climbing routes of varying difficulty, as well as a 915-metre-long zipline. A special overnight option is suspended beds among the treetops. Confirm their seasonal availability before making plans. The different routes and the zipline offer various kinds of activity, while the overnight stay itself becomes an experience.
The GEOSS Monument is located in Slivna, in surroundings featuring Slovenian symbols, nature, fresh air and views. Near Litija, the Sava forms its largest river bend and its most beautiful gravel deposits. The mine, hiking trails, culture and river landscape reveal different facets of the destination, without requiring a single, set itinerary.
