A stone, semicircular bridge over the Selca Sora was built in the mid-14th century and is considered the only one of its kind in Central Europe. It illustrates the historic character of Škofja Loka, whose medieval town centre is one of the best-preserved in Europe. You can choose different focuses for your stay: the town’s history, themed walks, or crafts and cuisine. Options range from a digital tour with an estimated duration to routes defined primarily by their themes or destinations.
City History and Collections
The Selca Sora and Poljana Sora rivers meet in Škofja Loka and then continue as the Sora. The stone bridge crosses the Selca Sora. If you would like to learn more about the town’s history, you can visit the Škofja Loka Museum at Loka Castle. The castle was originally built in 1202 and houses archaeological, historical, cultural-historical, artistic, ethnological, natural history and sports-related collections, as well as an open-air museum. Check which exhibitions are currently on before your visit.
The Capuchin Library also preserves special book treasures, including Dalmatin’s Bible, books with bindings dating from before 1500 and other rare works. To visit, go to the Capuchin Monastery and ring the bell; check the current visitor arrangements in advance. In the garden of Loka Castle, there is also a 16th-century house with a black kitchen. It illustrates the lives of tenant farmers and smallholders from the wider Loka area. Visits are possible by prior arrangement.
Passion Play and Living Crafts
The Škofja Loka Passion Play is a procession through the medieval town centre. It is performed during Lent and Easter with more than 900 local participants and takes place every six years. Since 2016, the Passion Play has been on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. If you would like to plan your trip around the performance, check the next date before booking.
The modern textile centre Kreativnice has been active in Škofja Loka since 2018. At Spodnji trg, designers work with felting, weaving, hand sewing, plant-based textile dyeing and printing. The space has no fixed opening hours: it is open to the public when the designers are there; opening by arrangement is also possible. The Rokodelski center DUO offers craft exhibitions and hands-on workshops. With advance registration, visitors can make a souvenir, a gift or a snack. With guidance from a master craftswoman, you can make models or bake mali loški kruhek.
Walks with Different Focuses
Romuald’s Trail connects 13 stops in an interactive tour that begins and ends in the Passion Room at Mestni trg. Allow about 1.5 hours; games and challenges are part of the route. Those who complete all 13 tasks receive a reward. Details of the digital tour may change with app updates, so it is worth checking the latest information.
Other routes offer different experiences. The trail to Puštal begins at the town square opposite Martin’s House and shares stories about how the people of Puštal used to live. The Three Castles Trail starts at Loka Castle and leads to the ruins of the tower on Krancelj and Wild Loka Castle. You can choose between a tour with tasks, a route centred on historical stories and a route to named castle sites. Conditions on the Three Castles Trail may vary; check them before setting out.
Cuisine and a Summer Stay
The guided culinary experience Tasty Škofja Loka Steps combines a walk through the medieval town centre with a five-course meal and an introduction to local culinary and craft traditions. Check booking requirements and availability before your trip. During the summer months, locals and visitors cool off at natural outdoor pools and swimming spots. Check their current condition and access arrangements before visiting.
