Podlonk can be viewed from three perspectives when planning a trip: hiking trails around Ratitovec, the Loška kolesarska pot and the settlement’s cultural history. If you are considering a trip, you can look at route descriptions, historical landmarks and local accommodation information separately.
Hiking and cycling
The Ratitovec Klasik follows a forest road towards Podlonk and reaches the edge of the settlement at the Žetlar farm. This section of the course continues from Žetlar to the hunting lodge in Prtovč. The Ratitovec Trail follows forest roads and paths past Podlonk, then climbs to Prtovč. Both descriptions mention Prtovč, but use different landmarks: the Klasik refers to Žetlar and the hunting lodge, while the Trail passes the settlement and then climbs. Check current trail conditions and markings before setting out.
For a cycling trip, the Loška kolesarska pot runs from Železniki through Podlonk and back to Železniki. The full route is 390 kilometres long and divided into 13 stages; these figures refer to the entire route, not to a single section in Podlonk. This places the settlement within a longer cycling route, while the hiking descriptions specify routes through the settlement and towards Prtovč. Check the current signs on site before setting off.
Cultural heritage and history
Domačija Podlonk 8 is part of Podlonk’s architectural heritage. Its commemorative heritage includes three other named sites: the Spominska plošča Jožetu Mihevcu-Rudarju, the Spominska plošča relejni kurirski postaji G-1 and the Spominski kamen posvetovanju aktivistov OF. The names refer to different commemorative subjects: a person, a courier station and a meeting of OF activists. Local heritage therefore includes both an architectural landmark and several commemorative sites.
The settlement’s history also places Podlonk in a broader context. It was part of the first wave of colonisation, also known as medieval colonisation, which extended across the eastern part of the Selška Valley. The Soriška colonisation covered the entire area below Ratitovec, from Sorica to Podlonk. The only foreign settlers who were settled in this area were German-speaking Tyroleans from the Pustertal. The first statement describes a phase of settlement; the second describes the geographical extent of the Soriška colonisation and the group settled there.
