Lake Bohinj is Slovenia’s largest permanent natural lake, located in the heart of Triglav National Park. The lake is of tectonic origin. Several underground karst springs lie on the north shore; Govic is the best known.

Hiking and cycling

The route around Lake Bohinj is just over 11 km long. If you would prefer to cover less distance, you can walk along just the north or south shore. Check local trail conditions before setting out.

Another way to explore the area is the Bohinj Cycling Route. It is fully paved and well signposted, and connects the Lower and Upper Bohinj valleys. The Na Rju bridge is an attractive stop along the route.

Swimming and water activities

Designated swimming areas are located in Fužine Bay and Ukanc. In summer, the water’s surface temperature can reach 24°C; local conditions vary. Check local guidance before swimming. ARSO monitors water quality at bathing water sites every 14 days during the bathing season, from 15 June to 31 August.

Boating on the lake is permitted except in the swimming areas in FuĹľine Bay and Ukanc. Launch and exit points include the south side of the bridge by the Church of St. John the Baptist. Check the current protected-area rules and launch options before setting out.

The one-way panoramic boat trip between RibÄŤev Laz and Ukanc takes 30 minutes. The two electric boats, Zlatorog and Triglavska roĹľa, operate in both directions between these locations on the lake. Check schedules and current service information before planning your trip.

A two-hour canoe trip on Lake Bohinj includes a round trip across the lake. The lake is also suitable for beginners trying canoeing for the first time. Dates and booking arrangements for organized activities may change; check them in advance.

Culture and seasonal events

The Church of St. John the Baptist was built before 1300. It is one of the outstanding examples of Slovenian medieval architecture; its oldest frescoes date from the 13th century.

The International Wildflower Festival takes place every year in May and June at various locations in Bohinj. Check the event dates and programme for your travel year. Mohant is also a Bohinj specialty with a European designation of origin.

Planning your stay

When looking for a holiday apartment, consider whether you would prefer to focus on trails or water activities during your stay. The lakeside route is just over 11 km long and can be shortened to cover just one shore; the one-way panoramic boat trip takes 30 minutes, while the canoe trip takes two hours.
