An early church in the town centre, a chapel dating from 1879 and a Renaissance defensive tower above Vuzenica provide clear markers in the town’s history. There are also trails for exploring nature, longer hikes and cycling. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Vuzenica, you can first consider whether churches and architectural history should be the main focus, or whether you would also like to make time for trails and cycling routes.
Churches, memorial rooms and architectural history
The Church of St Nicholas already stood in the centre of what is now Vuzenica at the beginning of the 12th century. To this day, it has preserved artistic elements from every stylistic period. The Chapel of St Florian (Kapela Sv. Florjana) was built in the historicist style at Spodnji trg in 1879. Together, the two buildings illustrate distinct historical periods, without their architectural history being limited to a single era.
Domestic architecture is also part of the local heritage: buildings made of hewn logs with numerous decorative details are regarded in Vuzenica as monuments of folk architecture and as evidence of earlier ways of life. Nearby, in Ĺ entjanĹľ nad DravÄŤami, Gothic frescoes cover almost all the interior walls of the Church of St John the Baptist. They were rediscovered in 1972.
The well-preserved Slomšek Memorial Room has a beamed ceiling decorated with small patterns, objects and everyday scenes, as well as inscriptions in German and Latin. Visitors can also see his desk and bed there. Check local access arrangements before your visit.
Pistrov grad and walking trails
The ruins of Pistrov grad lie above Vuzenica. A partially preserved Renaissance defensive tower stands there: a single-storey stone-and-brick building with a trapezoidal floor plan. The path to Pistrov grad offers views of Muta, Vuzenica and the Drava.
The Pistrov grad Forest Educational Trail focuses on the forest, its structure and development; it also offers a place for recreation and tranquillity. Its circular route is approximately three kilometres long. Nearby, the Vidova pot continues the Vuzenica forest trail, “Pistrov grad”. It runs for about three kilometres, almost entirely through the forest, to the Church of St Vid. The two trails are therefore similar in length but have different focuses: the circular route is a forest educational trail, while the Vidova pot leads to a church.
The Church of St Vid was built in the first half of the 15th century. Its first written record dates from the 1478 fief registers; of the churches in the surrounding area, it has undergone the fewest changes. For a longer hike, the route from Vuzenica to KremĹľarjev vrh is a different undertaking: it is 11.93 kilometres long, takes about three hours and 30 minutes, and is rated easy. Route data may change; check the latest GPX or trail information before setting out.
Cycling, events and the municipal area
Vuzenica is directly connected to the Drava Cycling Route. A well-developed cycling route runs from Vuzenica to Sv. PrimoĹľ na Pohorju and onwards to Mala Kopa and Velika Kopa. E-bikes and kayaks can be picked up and returned at the bike station next to the Huta venue. Rental is subject to the terms published there.
The Rokov Fair is a traditional annual fair in Vuzenica. Products, homemade food and various services are on offer. If you would like to plan your stay around the event, check the specific dates.
The Sedovnik linden tree, approximately 500 years old and about eight metres in circumference, stands in the municipality of Vuzenica. The Kremzer Museum, an antiquities museum owned by the Kremzer family, is also in the municipal area. It is housed in the former barn of the Lobenwein family, who once lived there. The KmeÄŤki Ethno Museum in Sv. PrimoĹľ na Pohorju uses objects that were in use on the farm until recently to illustrate the way of life of a farmer in the Pohorje region in earlier times.
When looking for a holiday apartment in Vuzenica, your plans can help you decide what to prioritise: churches and memorial rooms, trails around Pistrov grad, or cycling routes as well.
