In Radlje Ob Dravi, forests are also recognized as cultural heritage: at the municipality’s initiative, close-to-nature forest management was entered in Slovenia’s Register of Intangible Cultural Heritage. The municipality lies in the Drava Valley between the forested Kozjak and Pohorje ranges. Forests, trails and historical landmarks offer different ways to explore the region, from nature experiences to architectural history.

Experience the Forest and Compare Trails

The region’s natural landscape also includes the 552-hectare mixed Pahernik Forests on the northern slopes of Pohorje, between Vuhred and Velika Kopa. They are considered a popular excursion destination and an important place for learning. Dom gozdne kulture also focuses on sharing knowledge: its educational programs are intended for all generations and explore experiencing and perceiving the forest with all the senses.

The Stari grad Forest and History Trail is a circular route about 3 kilometers long. Information panels highlight botanical and historical features of the area. The trail is suitable for school groups, forestry professionals, hikers and families. The educational walking trail along the municipal boundaries follows a different format: it is divided into 22 stages and is particularly suitable for beginners and families with children. This means visitors can choose between a circular route with an approximate stated length and a hiking route divided into stages.

Cyclists can also connect with a wider regional route: the international long-distance Meridiem Trail links Vienna and Villach and passes through Radlje Ob Dravi. Check current route conditions before setting off. Near Radlje, the Dobrava Water Trail begins at Reš Pond. Along the Drava River, it combines a themed educational trail with an orienteering adventure to find five lost treasures; more than 15 themed panels line the route. In the forest, the Aktivarium encourages physical activity and offers nature experiences for all generations.

Art, Architectural History and Places of Remembrance

The Kalvarija is an artistic monument created in 1724. Seven life-size Baroque stone sculptures line the path to the hilltop and depict the Stations of the Cross. St. Michael’s Church in Radlje Ob Dravi was first mentioned in 1251. Its architecture includes a nave, a choir that ends on three sides of an octagon, a freestanding bell tower, a Baroque chapel and a sacristy.

Rosenhof, also known as “Flower Court,” probably dates back to the 16th century. Its architectural details from the early 17th century include wooden beam ceilings on the upper floor. The Dominican Monastery is an important cultural monument featuring architectural details from the early Baroque period.

The modern interactive Dvorec Radlje museum is housed in the former county estate, known as Lower Mahrenberg Castle. It is closed to visitors until further notice due to renovation work. Check its visitor status before your trip. At the Remšnik Mineral Museum, you can view and examine minerals from the Remšnik mines with the naked eye, under a magnifying glass and under a microscope; these include some very rare minerals. Visits must be arranged in advance.

Water and Local Life

Vodni Park Radlje ob Dravi is a biological swimming pool. Its water quality is maintained solely by natural organisms, without the addition of chemicals. There is a beach volleyball court right next to the park. As seasonal opening hours may change, check whether the park is open before visiting.

At the local Naša tržnica market, producers and craftspeople sell locally produced food and handmade goods directly to visitors. If you plan to visit the market, check the current market dates. Regular bus services run from Ljubljana, Celje, Maribor and Slovenj Gradec. You can also take the train to Vuhred and then continue by bus to Radlje Ob Dravi; the bus ride takes about five minutes. As schedules may change, check current connections before departure.
