Ribnica Na Pohorju combines a compact historic town center with hikes to high-altitude Ribnica Lake and winter sports on Pohorje. This gives you several different options when planning your trip: church art in town, hiking trails with very different time requirements, and seasonal conditions on the route to Ribniška Koča. First decide whether culture, a hike or winter sports will be the focus of your stay; this will help you choose destinations that fit the time you have available.
Churches and the historic town center
St. Bartholomew's Church is at the heart of the compact historic town center. Its distinctive Baroque architecture dates from 1740. Depictions of saints and a scene of the Last Supper were discovered beneath the plaster in 2005. The architecture and paintings offer different points of interest: one shapes the appearance of the church, while the other recalls the rediscovered wall paintings.
St. Leonard's Church reveals a different historical period. Its presbytery dates from the 15th century, and the church is part of an ensemble that includes a linden avenue and Stations of the Cross chapels. While the Baroque architecture and paintings stand out at St. Bartholomew's Church, St. Leonard's Church is notable for its older presbytery and its connection to the avenue and chapels. Together, the two churches offer different starting points for a cultural walk through the town's history.
To Ribnica Lake: a long hike or a short walk
The longer hike to Ribnica Lake starts in the village of Ribnica Na Pohorju and takes about two and a half hours each way. A shorter option starts at Lodge Ribniška Koča: from there, it is about a 30-minute walk to the lake. The two routes differ considerably in both starting point and time required. Allow for the return journey if you take the longer route; the actual duration may vary depending on your pace and conditions.
Ribnica Lake lies at an elevation of 1,480 meters in the middle of a peat bog. In winter, both shorter and longer hikes through unspoiled nature lead to this destination. You can plan the outing as a hike with a set walking time or as part of a winter day on Pohorje. The best option depends on whether you include the route from the village or the shorter walk from the lodge in your plans.
Winter sports and accommodation
The Ribnica Na Pohorju ski area has 2.2 kilometers of ski runs and sits at an elevation of between 721 and 921 meters. The family- and ski-friendly Ribnica Na Pohorju holiday resort, with its apartment houses, is located right next to the ski area. This makes it a practical point to consider when planning accommodation if skiing is your priority. When choosing hotels in Ribnica Na Pohorju, you can also consider whether you want to focus your days on winter sports, the historic town center or hikes to the lake.
Another perspective: the cycling loop
The Pohorje 3 – Ribnica na Pohorju cycling loop runs through Ribniško Pohorje and connects the centers of Kope and Ribnica na Pohorju. It offers a different focus from the hikes to the lake: the main attraction is a loop route between these centers. When planning your ride, it is worth checking the current condition of the trail markings and route.
Seasonal access to Ribniška Koča
An eight-kilometer road leads from Ribnica Na Pohorju to Ribniška Koča. In summer, you can drive or take a bus all the way to the lodge. In winter, the road is passable only as far as the lower station of the drag lift; from there, it is a 30-minute walk to the lodge. Seasonal access therefore changes the final part of the journey. Check road conditions before setting out, and allow time for the walk in winter.
